Process Control Technician: The Impact You’ll Have On The Organization and World

  • In this role you will focused on the safety, efficiency, and repeatability of our resin manufacturing to generate quality results.
  • You will be responsible for the creation, monitoring, and improvement of the batch processes at the assigned facility.
  • You will be the 1st call for plant batching or recipe issues while processing a batch.
  • You will have stewardship of the batch recipe from Start to Finish  and is constantly looking to improve the efficiency, repeatability, and automation of our batches to reduce operator intervention and errors.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like? Here are your primary responsibilities:

  • Strong process knowledge of the batch reactions, the equipment, and the safety aspects of the system.
  • Become proficient in the ability to program the associated batching software Experion Batch, PLC  etc.
  • Ability to audit other sites recipes for logical and safety sequencing and look for possible issues as a validation process.
  • Strong Data mining, historical trending capabilities to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop working relationships with both operations and Maintenance.
  • Strong Computer skills with the ability to utilize software tools like MES, Excel, SAP, etc.
  • Flexibility to monitor batch sequencing in real time which may require weekend or backshift monitoring.
  • Strong Team Leader/Member – The Process Control Technician  will be a key member of the site technical teams as well and facility siting for new products etc.
  • The ideal Process Control Technician has hand on expertise in the manufacturing of various resin types or strong technical background in the science of resin manufacturing. Hands on experience of resin manufacturing is an essential.

New product development

  • The Process Control Technician  will work with R&D as the product formulation is developed and ensure that the proposed formulation, temperatures, cooks and controls are reasonable and aligned with the facilities capability. Items like vacuum pull down, exotherm rate, material addition timing or temperature expectations are examples.
  • After the recipe sequence and critical parameters are established the Process Control Technician will develop and program the desired product recipe in the applicable DCS batching system. The recipe will be developed with appropriate instructional steps to aid the operations team to understand and follow the critical steps . The Process Control Technician will optimize the batching logic for a safe and efficient recipe flow.
  • All work will be verified by a second qualified Process Control Technician  to look for errors or efficiency opportunities.
  • The Process Controls Technician  will work with R&D to alter material addition times or temperatures, quantity etc to ensure a safe manufacturing instruction is generated.
  • The Process Control Technician will utilize their skills and process knowledge to establish recipes with minimal manual interactions, the goal is fully automated recipe execution.
  • Key team member evaluating new product feasibility at a facility helping make value driven business decisions.

Existing products / Typical Day in the life:

  • The Process Controls Technician is responsible to continually monitor batch performance against Rate Efficiency looking for opportunities to reduce batch times, reduce batch holds or unplanned manual interactions.
  • Data monitoring of live and historical batch trends using the available monitoring tools.
  • Review & troubleshoot any holds stops or Failures on PIs (Recipe).

What is Needed to be Successful in this Role (Required Skills/Abilities):

  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • 5-10 Years of Experience of chemical manufacturing.
  • The ability to positively influence personnel.
  • A clear understanding of the intricacies of operating a chemical reactor.
  • Computer literate with ability to understand the programming process within Honeywell Experian and/or other systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate up, down, and sideways in the organization.
  • The ability and willingness to communicate the why’s behind the changes to the resin making process that are coming and hold firm to the strategy if/ when there are challenges countercurrent to our end goal.
  • Dedicate to what we’re trying to accomplish to the point where extended hours at critical times will not be a problem.
  • Must have kettle experience.
