A Hair Stylist, on the other hand, is a licensed professional who provides hair cutting, coloring, and styling services to clients. While internships focus on education and skill development, stylists are actively working with clients and building their careers.

What is a hair internship?

A hair internship is a temporary, hands-on training program where aspiring hairstylists or cosmetology students work in a salon or similar setting to gain practical experience. Interns typically assist experienced stylists with tasks such as shampooing, blow-drying, maintaining the workspace, and sometimes observing or practicing basic hair techniques under supervision. The goal is to help interns develop their technical skills, learn about salon operations, and build confidence in a real-world environment before starting their professional careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hair Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hair Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge of hair care techniques, basic cosmetology training, and a willingness to learn under the guidance of licensed professionals. Familiarity with salon tools (such as shears, brushes, and styling equipment) and adherence to sanitation standards are typically required, and enrollment in or completion of a cosmetology program is often expected. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a positive attitude are important soft skills for building client trust and collaborating with team members. These skills and qualities are vital for providing quality service, ensuring client safety, and gaining valuable hands-on experience in a professional salon environment.

What is the highest paying job in the hair industry?

In the hair industry, the highest paying roles are often salon owners or celebrity hairstylists, who can earn six-figure incomes through client bookings, product lines, and brand endorsements. Advanced certifications, reputation, and business skills contribute to higher earnings in these positions.

What kinds of hands-on experiences can I expect during a hair internship?

During a hair internship, you can expect to assist with a variety of salon tasks such as shampooing, blow-drying, and organizing tools, as well as observing licensed stylists as they perform cutting, coloring, and styling services. You'll likely have opportunities to practice basic techniques under supervision, learn about client consultation, and gain exposure to salon sanitation standards. Interns often rotate through different roles, which helps build a comprehensive understanding of salon operations and teamwork. This hands-on experience is invaluable for building confidence and preparing for a future career as a stylist.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
