We have an opportunity at our corporate office in Chicago for a GVP/Chief Health and Science Officer (Hybrid) on our Health, Science, & Ethics team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3days a week in the office.
The GVP/Chief Health and Science Officer is amission-critical intellectual leader of American Medical Association (AMA) initiatives at the interfaces of practice, science, evidence, policy, ethics and technology. Visible, authoritative ambassador for the AMA's thought leadership to key external audiences and stakeholders in these areas. Marshalls guidance, vision, knowledge, and editorial expertise to AMA Senior Management, Board of Trustees, and House of Delegates on a spectrum from future strategies and plans to board reports. Operational leadership and accountability for: Science, Medicine and Public Health; Ethics Standards; AMA's USAN program; and Author Services and Publication Planning. Fosters a collaborative, engaging, and professionally supportive culture for AMA physicians on staff across units.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Intellectual Leadership/Subject Matter Expertise/Academic Profile/Editorial Output
- Proactive leadership role in surveillance of science, clinical, technology, and policy interfaces to identify emerging trends that will affect the science and practice of medicine; communicates these trends to AMA leadership to influence strategic thinking at early stages of these trends. Ensures that strategically critical subject matter expertise is staffed internally.
- Articulates, develops and implements AMA's strategy, presence, and leadership in emerging and rapidly evolving areas of science and medicine, including genomics and precision medicine and the use of artificial and augmented intelligence.
- Develops and pursues AMA's strategy for contributing to and being a significant presence in the public health arena; identifies select public health issues on which the AMA has a special contribution to make and coordinates efforts across the AMA to produce targeted impact on these issues; and utilizes staff across the AMA to act as spokespersons to the public health community and promote AMA positions.
- Ensures that the AMA establishes and maintains effective relationships with organizations and leaders in the medical, scientific, public health, patient safety, pharmaceutical, allied health, and education communities, as well as federal regulatory agencies, so that common objectives are pursued, problems are identified and resolved, and AMA policies are advanced.
- Representing the AMA in high profile, important national coalitions and initiatives, and liaison with key agencies, professional and other private and public organizations, activities which form the basis for being able to provide informed support for other parts of the AMA that rely on Health, Science, and Ethics
- Interacts collegially with peers in leadership positions across the spectrum of health systems (academia, government, non-profit, for-profit) to promote AMA services, products, and policies, while acquiring knowledge and attitudes to influence future AMA services, products, and policies.
Health, Science, and Ethics Operational Leadership and Oversight
- Interacts effectively with key AMA staff, as well as the members of the Councils and Committees that are staffed by Health, Science, and Ethics; provides leadership, direction, and oversight to these activities; and interacts with members of the House of Delegates on matters pertaining to their programs. Extends the AMA's "reach" and leverages in-house resources by developing and using "panels of experts" from the scientific, academic, and physician communities and other key opinion makers in medicine to provide input to AMA activities and act as spokespersons on behalf of the AMA.
- Provides leadership and direction to staff responsible for providing scientific input into the AMA's general policy development on physician and public education, and public health policy. Interacts with the Council on Science and Public Health to advance these policies as required.
- Promotes the development, acceptance, and implementation of AMA's ethical standards into the medical community by ensuring that staff provide effective support to the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA), maintaining the AMA's position as the leader in medical ethics, and by effectively communicating its specific positions on medical ethics to the medical community and the public at large.
- Leadership of the United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council, USAN website, the nonproprietary naming process for new drug substances in the United States, and related business activities of this tripartite organization (AMA, USP, APhA).
- Promotes the academic standards and profile of AMA through deployment of Author Services and Publication Planning.
- Direct staff that support the work of Reference Committees D, E and K.
AMA Cross-Unit Support of Key Initiatives
- Leadership and scientific support for several AMA functional areas, particularly state and federal advocacy, enterprise communications, and MMX, but also OGC, PS2, Health Solutions and Executive leadership, on emerging and clinically-relevant issues. Key topic areas are those related to the patient-prescriber interface (drug policy), the intersection of pain, opioids and addiction, genomics/precision medicine, and specific areas in public health including promoting immunization practices, fostering antimicrobial stewardship, firearm and other injury prevention, community health, and climate change.
May include other responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. MD or DO required.
2. At least 15 years' experience; at least 5 of which are preferred to be in an academic environment, in establishing, directing, and participating in the collection of information and the evaluation of research activities; and at least 5 of which have been in a clinical practice setting (hospital or office).
3. Demonstrated deep expertise and established a reputation in one or more medical or public health areas relevant to the AMA agenda.
4. Should have a well-established professional network with demonstrated experience in effectively utilizing that network to help achieve the goals of the organization.
5. Superior editorial skills, including skills in literature review, academic authorship, and editing the work of others.
6. Excellent leadership skills, particularly the ability to motivate and inspire an experienced professional staff to perform at a continually high level.
7. Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork, organizing teams, and delegating programs and authority to accomplish missions and objectives.
8. Extensive experience with medical education, science, public health, and quality of care policy issues is required. In-depth knowledge of current issues and demonstrated ability to participate on a senior level in appropriate policy forums is essential.
9. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership as needed to guide elected and appointed AMA policy bodies to reach effective and useful conclusions resulting in appropriate policy positions.
10. Polished interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and interact comfortably and effectively with elected leadership, senior officials, government officials, colleagues, and subordinate staff.
11. Demonstrated ability to maintain and enhance effective liaison and engage in teamwork with other AMA units in order to coordinate the AMA's quality-related activities.
12. Proven ability to manage large budgets and extensive staff.
13. Polished analytical skills to identify emerging policy issues, evaluate AMA policies relevant to those issues, and develop alternative policy positions that the Association might adopt.
14. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal presentation skills to deliver AMA messages to a wide variety of audiences, occasionally with limited time for preparation

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $420,000-$450,000. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
