A GS-14 position refers to a pay grade within the General Schedule (GS) used by the U.S. federal government to classify jobs. GS-14 roles are considered senior management, technical, or supervisory positions and typically require advanced experience and expertise. Employees at this level often lead teams, manage significant projects or programs, and provide expert advice within their agency. The pay range for GS-14 varies depending on location, but it is among the higher GS pay grades.

What are some typical challenges a GS-14 employee might face when transitioning from technical roles to managerial responsibilities?

One common challenge is shifting from being a subject matter expert to focusing more on leadership, delegation, and strategic planning. Navigating federal regulations, managing diverse teams, and adapting to a more policy-driven environment can also be demanding. Successful GS-14s often leverage strong communication skills and seek mentorship to ease the transition.
