Job description

Voleon is a technology company that applies state-of-the-art AI and machine learning techniques to real-world problems in finance. For nearly two decades, we have led our industry and worked at the frontier of applying AI/ML to investment management. We have become a multibillion-dollar asset manager, and we have ambitious goals for the future.
Your colleagues will include internationally recognized experts in artificial intelligence and machine learning research as well as highly experienced finance and technology professionals. In addition to our enriching and collegial working environment, we offer highly competitive compensation and benefits packages, technology talks by our experts, a beautiful modern office, daily catered lunches, and more.
As Technical Manager, Software Platform Engineering, you will lead an engineering team within the Software Platform organization, which builds and operates the foundational services that power the firm's research and trading systems. The Software Platform organization owns the firm's HPC compute cluster, cloud environments, developer experience tooling, data platform, and operational data systems. The organization is growing, and we are looking for someone excited to be part of a platform team with a broad mandate. Your initial focus will be on developer experience - the build systems, CI/CD infrastructure, developer tooling, and deployment automation that enable engineers to build, test, deploy, and maintain software across the company - with the opportunity to expand into cloud platform services as the team evolves, including intelligent workload placement and routing, cloud resource optimization, cost governance, and operational reliability for research workloads.
Your team will deliver highly reliable, performant platforms with high availability, strong observability, and consistent performance. You will improve engineering velocity and researcher productivity by reducing friction, standardizing workflows, and modernizing tooling. You will own the roadmap for your domain, grow and scale the team, and collaborate with peers across engineering, infrastructure, research, and security to balance competing priorities and make thoughtful tradeoffs.
Responsibilities
  • Manage, grow, and hire for a team of platform and infrastructure engineers - and mentor ICs to continuously raise the technical bar
  • Be hands-on technically - dig into code, debug systems, and work alongside the team to solve hard problems
  • Own the roadmap for your domain, define ambitious goals, and reliably deliver against them
  • Build and operate the systems that power the software development lifecycle - build systems, CI/CD, developer tooling, deployment automation - with high reliability, observability, and performance
  • Improve engineering and researcher productivity by building well-designed platform abstractions, standardizing workflows, and reducing infrastructure friction
  • Partner across infrastructure, security, research, and engineering to ensure seamless integration
  • As the team grows, potentially expand scope into cloud platform services - including workload routing, resource optimization, and cost governance

Requirements
  • Computer Science degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 2+ years of engineering management experience
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Demonstrated experience managing and mentoring engineering teams
  • Proven ability to attract, hire, and retain exceptional engineering talent
  • Strong programming experience in Python, Go, C++, or similar
  • Experience building or operating developer platforms, cloud infrastructure, or internal platform services - ideally with exposure to both on-prem and cloud environments
  • Experience operating critical systems with high reliability requirements
  • Knowledge of best practices for scalable system design and operational excellence
  • Ability to dive deep technically while maintaining a strategic view of platform architecture
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering and research organizations
  • Experience operating critical systems with high reliability and availability requirements
  • Knowledge of best practices for scalable system design, reliability engineering, and operational excellence
  • Strong communication skills and ability to drive alignment across stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or similar) alongside on-prem systems
  • Experience with large monorepos, Bazel or similar build systems
  • Experience improving developer productivity at scale
  • Experience with CI/CD systems or internal platform engineering
  • Experience optimizing cloud resource usage or managing cloud cost efficiency at scale
  • Experience leading teams through cloud adoption or infrastructure modernization
