Job description

The Harrison Family YMCA is seeking a part-time Group Exercise Coordinator who, under the direction of the Healthy Living Director, will coordinate and oversee Group Exercise and Water Fitness programs. The incumbent will be responsible for scheduling, program development, instructor support, and evaluation of classes to ensure high-quality member experiences. This role will also support member engagement and retention by offering a variety of inclusive, safe, and effective classes while advancing the YMCA mission and values among members and in the community. Additionally, this position will assist in the management and oversight of grants related to Group Exercise programming, including tracking, reporting, and ensuring alignment with grant requirements.

Hours: Part-time hours based on program needs. Schedule will vary and may include early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends based on class offerings and program demands.


  • Coordinate planning, scheduling, and quarterly updates of all Group Exercise and Water Fitness classes.
  • Teach group exercise classes regularly.
  • Coordinate substitute instructors and fill in for instructors when necessary.
  • Coach and support Group Exercise instructors to ensure variety in class formats, times, and offerings that meet the needs of all members.
  • In collaboration with the Healthy Living Director, evaluate classes to ensure member satisfaction, monitor attendance, and maintain program quality standards.
  • Support the Healthy Living Director in conducting quarterly member surveys for Group Exercise classes and utilizing feedback to improve programming.
  • Develop and implement new Group Exercise and Water Fitness class offerings based on member needs and industry trends.
  • Partner with the Healthy Living Director to coordinate Child Watch hours that align with Group Exercise schedules, working in collaboration with the Membership Director.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and ongoing support of Group Exercise instructors as needed.
  • Ensure all instructor certifications are current and on file.
  • Manage and deliver grant-funded Group Exercise programs, including tracking, reporting, and data collection requirements.
  • Assist with data collection and record-keeping for programs and initiatives.
  • Review salary administration checklist (wage rate/Hay Plan) annually under the supervision of the Healthy Living Director
  • Ensure proper setup, cleanliness, and safety of all group exercise spaces and equipment.
  • Serve as a point of contact for Group Exercise instructors and members, communicating feedback and concerns to the Healthy Living Director in a timely manner for follow-up.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and YMCA initiatives as required.
  • Support the Healthy Living Director in coordinating Annual Campaign fundraising efforts among group exercise classes and instructors.
  • Coordinate research, facilitation, and building of quality programs that exceed member satisfaction.
  • In collaboration with the Healthy Living Director, serve as a point of contact for Group Exercise instructors and members by gathering and sharing feedback and complaints for timely resolution.
  • Participate in community outreach.
  • Actively participate in training sessions and designated meetings. Ensure attendance of group exercise staff.
  • Assist Healthy Living Director with music licensing, YMCA360, and Les Mills accounts as needed.
  • Be a team player who can solve problems and communicate effectively with supervisors, employees, members, and program participants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Experience in teaching group exercise classes required.
  • Experience in program coordination or supervision preferred.
  • Current CPR / First Aid / AED certifications.
  • Nationally recognized Group Exercise certification (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, or YMCA equivalent) required.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Personal Training certification is preferred.
