About the Role
The Manager, Ballpark Grounds is the Long Beach Coast's primary grounds contact at Blair Field. This role works directly alongside the California State University Long Beach Director of Ballpark Grounds and is responsible for all game day field operations, grounds crew management, and coordinating non-game day maintenance staff to keep the field in top condition throughout the season. The ideal candidate takes pride in the craft of grounds management, communicates well across teams, and understands the importance of field quality to both player performance and fan experience.
What You'll Do
Field Preparation & Game Day Operations
  • Prepare the field for all home games including mowing, dragging, chalking, and infield/outfield grooming
  • Set up and maintain all base installations, mound, and plate areas prior to each game
  • Execute between-inning field maintenance during games as needed
  • Stage and deploy field tarp for rain or weather delays
  • Ensure the field is cleared and ready prior to gates opening
  • Coordinate field readiness and sign-off with the Director of Stadium Operations before each game

Turf & Field Maintenance
  • Manage daily and weekly turf maintenance including mowing, watering, fertilizing, aeration, and overseeding
  • Monitor irrigation systems and adjust schedules based on weather and field conditions
  • Maintain the warning track, bullpen areas, and foul territory
  • Identify and address any field damage or safety concerns promptly
  • Maintain the infield clay, mound, and home plate area to professional standards
  • Keep all grounds equipment clean, maintained, and in working order

Scheduling & Staff Coordination
  • Serve as the Long Beach Coast's number one grounds contact at Blair Field, working in partnership with the CSULB Director of Ballpark Grounds
  • Build and manage game day grounds schedules aligned to all home game first pitch times
  • Manage and direct grounds crew staffing for all home games including task assignments, timing, and post-game lockup
  • Recruit, hire, and schedule maintenance staff for non-game day field upkeep and turf management work
  • Coordinate with the Director of Stadium Operations on field access, event setup, and any special requests
  • Communicate proactively about field conditions, weather concerns, and any issues that could affect playability

Equipment & Facilities
  • Maintain inventory of all grounds supplies including chalk, clay, seed, fertilizer, and chemicals
  • Operate and maintain grounds equipment including mowers, drag equipment, rollers, and irrigation systems
  • Coordinate equipment repairs and replacements as needed
  • Ensure all grounds areas are secure after each game and following maintenance sessions

General Game Day Duties
  • Work closely with operations staff on stadium setup and breakdown before and after games
  • Assist with weather monitoring and communicate delay or cancellation recommendations to the DSO
  • Support any other game day operational needs as directed by stadium operations leadership

What You Bring
  • Hands-on experience in turf management, grounds keeping, or sports field maintenance
  • Knowledge of infield clay maintenance, natural grass care, and field irrigation systems
  • Ability to operate standard grounds equipment including riding mowers, drag equipment, and utility vehicles
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays throughout the season
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical labor for extended periods
  • Reliable, organized, and detail-oriented with a high standard for field quality
  • Team-first attitude with good communication skills
  • Experience with professional or collegiate baseball fields preferred but not required
