They typically assist with researching grant opportunities, preparing and submitting grant proposals, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements. Additionally, they may help track deadlines, manage budgets, and report on the outcomes of grant-funded projects. Their work is vital for nonprofits, educational institutions, and other organizations that rely on external funding to achieve their missions.

How does a Grants Associate typically collaborate with program teams and external partners during the grant application process?

A Grants Associate works closely with program teams to gather necessary project information, budgets, and measurable outcomes required for compelling grant proposals. They often coordinate meetings and facilitate communication to ensure all stakeholders are aligned on objectives and deadlines. Externally, Grants Associates may interact with funders or partner organizations to clarify application requirements and build relationships for future opportunities. This collaborative approach ensures proposals are accurate, competitive, and in line with organizational priorities.

Job description

Senior Manager, Community Investment Portfolio - Grant Operations
Global Enterprise Affairs works with many external and internal stakeholders to envision and create greater financial opportunity through advocating for policy priorities, building thriving communities, and creating financial tools that enrich lives. Our teams include Communications, Community Impact and Investment, Community Finance, CRA Strategy and Program Management, the Government and Political Affairs Group, Regulatory Relations, and Strategy and Engagement. Through our teams, we have unparalleled access to a diverse group of motivated changemakers similarly focused on Capital One's mission to change banking for good.
Community Impact and Investment works to align business strategy and social impact. We launch holistic approaches to investing in our communities, support the use of Capital One's volunteer time and talent in increasingly strategic ways, and use data, analytics, research, and inclusive design to inform more targeted and actionable consulting to our business partners on topics related to a broad view of consumer financial health.
We're seeking a passionate and motivated leader to lead our Grant Operations team, part of CI&I's Community Portfolio Management Office (CPMO) tower. The Grant Operations team plays a crucial role in the delivery of 1000+ philanthropic grants annually to community partners, ensuring a well managed process with appropriate controls and risk awareness.
In this role, you'll be expected to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
  • Strategic creation and delivery of reporting products designed to shape the delivery of CI&I's Philanthropy Strategy and business commitments
  • Designing portfolio monitoring functions that enable leadership decision making
  • Deliver always-on process improvements for all grantmaking across CI&I, working closely with relationship management and product teams to automate and deliver great experiences
  • Own and enhance process controls to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with enterprise philanthropic giving, data sharing, and payment processing policies
  • Oversee the payment distribution process, ensuring compliance with up and downstream enterprise payments controls
  • Partner with the Community Reinvestment Act team, Corporate Communications, and other GEA stakeholders to identify data needs for storytelling and build the systems and infrastructure to capture that data and visualize it for multiple use cases
  • Modernize and streamline our process to ensure ongoing qualification and regulatory reporting for CRA-eligible grants and CBP reporting
  • Recruit, mentor and invest in a team of highly motivated, passionate and detail oriented grant operations associates to:
    • Oversee the full grant transaction process from application, to approval, to funding, to reporting
    • Input high-quality, vetted data points to ensure accurate reporting
    • Act as primary POC for any grantees within the application stage, troubleshooting needs, and facilitating timely and accurate inputs
    • Monitor and process all funding transactions, ensuring we are operating in accordance with risk and compliance guidelines
    • Support our qualitative narrative and ESG story writers to ensure our grant operations processes provide them the data needed to write impactful stories
    • Partner with our CRA strategy team to ensure CRA-eligible grants are qualified for regulatory reporting.

We want you if you are:
  • Impact-driven. You dream big. You get energy from working with others with similar passions to accomplish big, bold goals for Capital One and our communities.
  • A Talent Champion. Committed to the always-on drive to develop and grow your team and the talent across the organization.
  • Wired for Collaboration and Connection: You thrive in a matrixed organization because you know that together we can do better. You love to drive action through collaboration where partnership drives success.
  • ROI obsessed. You care about doing what's best for the community and for Capital one's associates and business and you know that limited resources mean we have to "pick our spots."
  • Intellectually Curious, with a strong Point of View. You ask why, you explore, you're comfortable with ambiguity, you're hungry to learn and a seeker of new challenges.
  • Do-er. You're biased toward action, you try things and sometimes you fail. You love an MVP. You can get around your own roadblocks and you remove obstacles for your team to stay focused on goals.
  • Improver. You are wired to see how all processes can be improved, whether you're standing in line at a coffee shop or triaging multi-million dollar decisions, you are always thinking about ways to streamline the process. And then you do.

Basic Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of experience in process management or project management, or a combination
  • At least 1 year of experience in volunteerism, talent engagement, or associate experience
  • At least 1 year of experience in people leadership

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in back office operations (e.g., transaction processing)
  • Experience with stakeholder management
  • Experience administrating a 3rd Party or vendor-managed system
  • Lite product management experience and/or customer experience/success management
  • Grant management experience
