Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Psychology, within the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, is seeking an assistant or associate professor with a Ph.D. in Neuropsychology. Preference will be given to candidates with a research focus in 1) substance use disorders, 2) memory and cognition, 3) applied psychology, or 4) health psychology. The selected candidate will be expected to provide student-centered teaching and instruction of undergraduate courses in their discipline. They will also teach graduate level courses for the MS in Health Psychology and the PhD in Applied Psychology in courses aligned with their area of expertise.
Faculty in this role are expected to contribute to student advising, mentoring, curriculum development, and engage in program assessment. The ideal candidate will be expected to: (i) establish and sustain a strong, externally-funded research program aligned with their field of expertise; (ii) produce an excellent record of scholarly publications; (iii) incorporate modern pedagogical skills in undergraduate and graduate psychology courses; (iv) supervise and support psychology students in independent research projects; and (v) engage in service at the department, college and university as well as to appropriate community and professional organizations. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina A & T State University is a public land grant high research institution that is committed to teaching and learning, scholarly and creative research, and effective engagement and public service. The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences (HCHHS) is comprised of six departments and the School of Nursing. The HCHHS offers the following undergraduate degree programs; Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level, HCHHS offers four graduate degree programs including the Masters in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPA), Master of Social Work (MSW), Master of Science in Health Psychology and Ph.D. in Social Work, PhD in Applied Psychology, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (CIHDER), which serves as a multidisciplinary hub for research and community engagement aimed at advancing health for all. The HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity.
The Department of Psychology is a supportive community of committed faculty and practitioners whose goals are to introduce students to the ideas and concepts relevant to this discipline, encourage interdisciplinary learning, prepare students for study in graduate school, prepare students for entry-level jobs requiring knowledge in psychology, and train students to conduct both basic and applied research. These goals are achieved through quality classroom instruction, departmental colloquia, departmental student organizations, internship opportunities through independent study, and individualized research projects. The Department of Psychology has 980 enrolled undergraduate students and 45 graduate students. The department is seeking candidates to join a growing program with a highly interactive and productive faculty.
