What does a graduate nurse in labor and delivery do?

A Graduate Nurse in Labor and Delivery assists with the care of expectant mothers before, during, and after childbirth under the supervision of licensed nurses and physicians. Their responsibilities may include monitoring vital signs, assisting with labor procedures, supporting mothers emotionally, and helping with newborn care. As recent graduates, they are typically in a transitional period where they gain hands-on experience and prepare for full licensure. This role is essential for ensuring the safety and comfort of both mothers and babies during the birthing process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate nurse in labor and delivery?

To thrive as a Graduate Nurse in Labor and Delivery, you need foundational nursing education, clinical competency in maternal and neonatal care, and an active RN license or eligibility. Familiarity with fetal monitoring systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and basic life support (BLS) or neonatal resuscitation (NRP) certifications is highly valued. Compassion, adaptability, and strong communication skills are crucial for supporting expectant mothers and collaborating with the healthcare team. These abilities are essential to ensure patient safety, provide emotional support, and deliver quality outcomes in the dynamic and sensitive environment of labor and delivery.
