Job description

Position Summary

The Foreman is responsible for supervising and coordinating field crews engaged in heavy civil construction, including mass grading, site development, and installation of underground utilities (water, sewer, storm drain, and dry utilities). This role ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with project plans and specifications.

Key Responsibilities

Field Supervision & Production

  • Lead and direct crews in daily operations for grading and underground utility installation
  • Interpret plans, specifications, and staking to ensure accurate execution of work
  • Coordinate equipment, materials, and manpower to meet production goals
  • Monitor productivity and adjust workflow to maintain schedule and efficiency
  • Perform grade checking and ensure tolerances are met

Underground Utilities

  • Oversee installation of water, sewer, and storm drain systems
  • Ensure proper trenching, bedding, pipe installation, and backfill procedures
  • Verify compliance with local, state, and project-specific utility standards
  • Coordinate tie-ins, testing, and inspections with agencies and inspectors

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations
  • Conduct daily tailgate/toolbox safety meetings
  • Identify and mitigate hazards, especially around trenching and excavations
  • Ensure proper use of trench protection systems (shoring, shielding, sloping)
  • Maintain a clean and organized jobsite

Coordination & Communication

  • Work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and other trades
  • Coordinate with survey crews, inspectors, and subcontractors
  • Communicate daily progress, issues, and needs to management
  • Assist with scheduling and sequencing of work activities

Quality Control

  • Ensure all work meets project specifications and quality standards
  • Identify and correct deficiencies promptly
  • Maintain awareness of inspection requirements and ensure readiness

Equipment & Materials

  • Oversee proper use and maintenance of heavy equipment
  • Track and request materials, ensuring timely delivery to the site
  • Minimize waste and control costs


Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, with at least 2 years in a leadership role
  • Strong background in grading and underground utility installation
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and grade stakes
  • Knowledge of trench safety and excavation standards
  • Experience operating or directing heavy equipment (excavators, dozers, loaders, etc.)
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • CPR/First Aid certification
  • Experience with GPS machine control and grade checking tools
  • Valid driver’s license


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work extended hours, including weekends as needed
