Field Install Technician โ Central and Bay CountiesJob Description
DirtPrep is seeking a Field Install Technician to support customer installations throughout Central California and the Bay Area. Candidates should ideally be based in Central California and be comfortable traveling to job sites from Mendocino county to Fresno county, with additional travel as needed.
This is a hands-on technical field role focused on installing, calibrating, troubleshooting, and supporting GPS and machine control systems used on heavy construction and earthmoving equipment. This is not a sales role. The right person will enjoy working with equipment, solving technical problems, supporting customers in the field, and learning advanced construction technology.
Position Overview
The Field Install Technician is responsible for installing and supporting DirtPrep systems at customer job sites. This includes working on earthmoving machinery, setting up GPS-enabled equipment, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and helping operators understand how to use the systems effectively.
This role requires a strong mix of mechanical ability, basic electrical understanding, computer comfort, customer service, and field judgment. The technician will often be working independently at active job sites and must be able to represent DirtPrep professionally while ensuring each installation is completed safely and correctly.
Key Responsibilities
Install, configure, and calibrate GPS and machine control systems on earthmoving machinery and related construction equipment.
Perform system diagnostics, software updates, hardware checks, and troubleshooting in the field.
Assist with wiring, mounting, sensor setup, displays, antennas, cabling, and related installation tasks.
Train equipment operators and site personnel on basic system use, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Conduct quality checks to confirm installations meet DirtPrep standards and customer requirements.
Document installation details, site conditions, equipment information, issues found, and adjustments made.
Communicate clearly with customers, operators, and internal team members regarding installation status and support needs.
Coordinate with product support, modeling, and operations teams to resolve more complex technical issues.
Provide field feedback regarding system performance, customer usage, recurring issues, and potential process improvements.
Maintain tools, testing equipment, parts, supplies, and installation vehicles in clean and working condition.
Follow all company safety expectations, customer site rules, and job-site safety requirements.
Required Qualifications
Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working around heavy equipment.
Basic electrical troubleshooting ability, including comfort with wiring, connections, sensors, cables, and power sources.
Experience with heavy equipment, construction equipment, GPS systems, machine control, surveying, or related field work.
Ability to read and follow technical manuals, installation guides, diagrams, and equipment documentation.
Comfortable using computers, tablets, software systems, and basic troubleshooting tools.
Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work through issues in the field.
Professional communication skills and ability to support customers on active job sites.
Valid driverโs license and ability to travel regularly to customer locations.
Ability to work independently and manage changing field conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Leica, Trimble, Topcon, or other GPS/machine control construction systems.
Experience in earthmoving, grading, construction, heavy equipment, surveying, field service, or equipment installation.
Background as a mechanic, equipment technician, survey tech, grade checker, field engineer, or construction technology technician.
OSHA 10, OSHA 30, or other safety certifications.
Technical training in electronics, mechanics, construction technology, surveying, GPS systems, or a related field.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to climb on and around heavy equipment safely.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, use hand tools, and work in/around active construction sites.
Willingness to wear required PPE and follow all customer and job-site safety requirements.
Travel Requirements
This role requires regular field travel throughout Central California, the Bay Area, and surrounding counties. Overnight travel may be required depending on customer location, project needs, and scheduling.
Estimated travel may range from 25% to 75%, including occasional overnight stays.
Compensation
Compensation will be based on experience, technical skill level, and field-service background.
