Job description

St. Norbert College, a nationally ranked, private, Catholic liberal arts college, is seeking an Accountant. This position is responsible for performing general ledger and bank account reconciliations, administering the college purchasing card program, processing journal entries, maintaining fixed asset records, preparing various tax filings, and overseeing department webpage and chart of accounts maintenance. The Accountant also supports the maintenance of the college's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, Workday, and applies a working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Process journal entries in the computerized accounting system and maintain the chart of accounts.

  • Prepare complex balance sheet account reconciliations, investigate and resolve reconciling items, analyze daily bank account activity, and promptly address discrepancies.

  • Audit petty cash funds and inventory to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Administer the College purchasing card program, including program oversight and support.

  • Serve as the functional supervisor and primary backup for the Accounts Payable Specialist.

  • Process weekly accounts payable check runs and direct deposit payments.

  • Manage the College's fixed asset records by tagging, verifying, and maintaining assets within the computerized fixed asset system.

  • Prepare year-end audit workpapers, assist external auditors during the annual audit process, maintain accounting procedures, and serve as the backup to the Director of Accounting Services.

  • Prepare and file reports for unclaimed property, excise tax, sales tax, and property taxes to ensure compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain and update the Accounting Services department webpage.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.

  • 3-5 years of experience in a related field.

  • 2-3 years of experience with a computerized accounting system.

  • Skilled in general accounting practices.

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to interact professionally and courteously with coworkers and customers, including effectively resolving conflict and customer service issues.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Workday, and the ability to learn new systems and software.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to coordinate events, programs, and projects from planning through completion.

  • Ability to lead by example and foster a positive, collaborative work environment.
