Prestonwood Country Club is seeking a dedicated and career driven Assistant in Training (AIT) to join our Golf Course Maintenance team. This position is designed for individuals pursuing a career in golf course and turfgrass management, offering comprehensive, hands-on experience at a premier multi-course facility.
The AIT will have the unique opportunity to train across three different golf courses, each led by its own Golf Course Superintendent. This structure provides exposure to a variety of management styles, course conditions, and operational approaches, creating a well-rounded and dynamic learning environment.
Working closely with the superintendent team, the AIT will gain practical experience in all aspects of course maintenance, including turfgrass management, irrigation systems, pest and disease control, course setup, fertilizer and spray applications and equipment operation. Additionally, the role offers valuable experience managing multiple greens grass types, allowing the AIT to develop a deeper understanding of differing agronomic practices and playability standards.
Ideal candidates are highly motivated, detail-oriented, and passionate about agronomy and outdoor operations. A strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment are essential. This position offers a clear pathway for professional growth and advancement within the golf course maintenance industry.
PRINCIPAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:• Assist in daily golf course maintenance operations
• Participate in agronomic programs including fertilization and chemical applications
• Maintain accurate records for chemical applications
• Monitor course conditions and communicate issues
• Assist with irrigation system operation and repairs
• Support supervision of maintenance staff
• Assist with tournament and event preparation
• Participate in continuing education
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:• Degree or enrollment in Turfgrass Management or related field preferred
• Ability to obtain NC Pesticide License within 6 months
• Valid driver's license required
• Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
DEVELOPMENT EXPECTATIONS (AIT PROGRAM):• Gain proficiency in all core golf course maintenance functions within the first 6 months
• Assist in chemical and fertilization planning and execution under supervision within the first 12 months
• Demonstrate ability to lead daily crew assignments and small teams
• Develop working knowledge of irrigation systems, troubleshooting, and repairs
• Build foundational understanding of budgeting, resource allocation, and operational planning
• Actively participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities
• Demonstrate readiness for promotion to Assistant Superintendent based on performance, leadership, and technical competency
