Responsibilities
About the role:
The Network Technical Principal, under the general direction of the Manager, will assist in the day-to-day tasks critical to the team's success. This position is responsible for the architecture and engineering design of our Global Enterprise Network in the areas of Software Defined Networking, Core Routing, Automation and Security. This team member will function in an indirect leader position providing guidance, project management, direction and training to less experienced engineers. This position will establish themselves as the go-to person for all escalation issues within their team. This candidate is responsible for all Tier III support escalations from our Operations and Engineering teams. Additionally, the engineers will focus on sustainability and improvement of processes, along with task automation to improve process efficiency. Follow GM Financial established change procedures to implement network enhancements and maintenance which includes after-hours work.
  • Research and assess new technologies in the areas of Software Defined Networking, Core Routing, Automation and Security to ensure our Architecture is current and providing world class capabilities and performance
  • Recommend and design Software Defined Networking, Core Routing, Automation and Security solutions that seamlessly integrate into existing infrastructure
  • Pioneer automation initiative to provide self-service workflows to our customers and automated deployments for our team members where possible in our existing infrastructure utilizing tools like Terraform, Ansible, and YAML
  • Evaluate, review and if appropriate, implement recommendations for improvements to existing network procedures and documentation for efficient and cost-effective delivery of highly available network services
  • Provide third-tier technical support to GM Financial and its other information technology teams to resolve network issues and to support the implementation of new network solutions
  • Follow established change procedures to implement network maintenance, enhancements, and changes during appropriate change windows
  • Author policy, procedure, network diagrams and standards documents based on industry best practices and personal research and experience
  • Lead development, testing, documentation, and QA functions to ensure that projects are securely delivered and fulfill expectations
  • Responsible for technical leading, coaching, mentoring, and guidance of peer network engineers
  • Assist management with training activities of network engineering peers
  • Provide recommendations to management team to increase effectiveness of organization and technology solutions
  • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training as appropriate
  • Use Service Now ticket queues to resolve incident management tickets and tasks as they arise with timely resolution
  • Collaborates with external and internal customers to analyze information needs and functional requirements and deliver the artifacts as needed
  • Must have high attention to detail, be well organized and be a self-starter
  • Use a broad and deep understanding of technical concepts in multiple specialized fields to develop solutions to problems and critical design issues
  • Understands and promotes the GM Financial policy on Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) to ensure ongoing adherence to all relevant compliance regulations that may govern the GM Financial business and complete all regulatory knowledge training where applicable in a timely fashion
  • Function as backup to the network manager when necessary

Skills and Knowledge
  • Must have proven expert level knowledge in at several of the following areas:
  • Major routing protocols OSFP and BGP. This includes advanced routing techniques such as Policy Based Routing, VRF, and QoS
  • Campus network switching design and configuration including FHRPs, VSS, vPC, VTP, Multicast, and Spanning Tree
  • SD-WAN (Viptela/Cisco preferred)
  • SDN configuration, troubleshooting, and design (Cisco ACI preferred)
  • Network automation tools Ansible, Terraform, and RestAPI
  • Cloud data center configuration, troubleshooting, and design (Equinix, Azure)
  • Network Access Control using Cisco ISE, 802.1X, AAA, and ACS
  • Cisco Wireless networks; WLC, Prime Infrastructure and site surveys
  • Advanced skill in architectural design, installation, and maintenance of Cisco network infrastructure within an organization
  • Experience with current networking best practices in IT standards and principles
  • Experience with packet capture, e.g., Wireshark and log analysis products
  • Experience with network monitoring tools, e.g. 1KE, LiveNX and NNMi
  • Experience with IP Management/DHCP tools
  • Excellent technical documentation skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of industry trends and new technologies and ability to apply this to day-to-day work activities
  • Knowledge of enterprise platforms and operating systems as well as knowledge of key business functions and processes
  • Partner with customers to provide value and meet customer goals

Education & Work Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent work experience preferred
  • Greater than 10 years in network engineering and design strongly preferred

Licenses and Certifications
  • CCIE or equivalent knowledge and skill preferred
