What is global purchasing?

Global purchasing refers to the process by which organizations buy goods and services from suppliers located in different countries around the world. This practice enables companies to access a broader range of products, often at lower costs, while also leveraging global expertise and innovation. Global purchasing requires careful management of logistics, supplier relationships, currency fluctuations, and international regulations to ensure a reliable and cost-effective supply chain.

What is the difference between Global Purchasing vs Procurement Specialist?

AspectGlobal PurchasingProcurement Specialist
CredentialsTypically requires purchasing certifications, supply chain knowledgeSimilar certifications, focus on procurement processes
Work EnvironmentInternational companies, global supply chainsVaries from corporate to manufacturing settings
Industry UsageCommon in multinational corporationsWidespread across industries
Search & ComparisonOften compared for scope and responsibilitiesRelated but more localized focus

Global Purchasing involves managing international supplier relationships and sourcing on a worldwide scale, often requiring knowledge of global markets and logistics. Procurement Specialists typically focus on acquiring goods and services within a specific region or company, emphasizing local supplier management. While both roles require similar certifications and skills, Global Purchasing has a broader scope involving international negotiations and compliance, whereas Procurement Specialists concentrate on day-to-day procurement activities within a defined area.

How does a Global Purchasing professional typically collaborate with suppliers and cross-functional teams to ensure timely and cost-effective procurement?

Global Purchasing professionals regularly coordinate with suppliers across different regions to negotiate contracts, manage lead times, and ensure compliance with company standards. They often work closely with internal teams such as logistics, finance, and product development to align purchasing strategies with business goals. Effective communication and relationship-building are essential, as is staying updated on market trends and potential supply chain disruptions. This collaborative approach helps ensure timely deliveries, cost savings, and quality assurance throughout the procurement process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Global Purchasing, and why are they important?

To thrive in Global Purchasing, you need expertise in supply chain management, negotiation, and international trade, often supported by a degree in business, logistics, or a related field. Familiarity with procurement software (such as SAP or Oracle), contract management systems, and trade compliance certifications is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, cross-cultural communication, and relationship-building skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for optimizing sourcing strategies, managing risks, and ensuring cost-effective, reliable procurement across global markets.

Job description

Reporting to the DVP BU Manager, the Global Purchasing Director defines and leads the global purchasing strategy for CAMECA. The role has worldwide responsibility for procurement activities covering the three production sites in the United States and France, ensuring cost competitiveness, supply continuity, quality, and risk mitigation in support of business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Global Purchasing Strategy & Governance

  • Defining, formalizing, and deploying a global purchasing strategy aligned with CAMECA strategic objectives, growth roadmap, and operational priorities.
  • Establishing a clear purchasing governance model (decision rights, escalation, global vs. local responsibilities).
  • Driving standardization of purchasing policies, procedures, tools, and KPIs across all manufacturing sites.

 Procurement Operations & Spend Management

  • Overseeing all procurement activities for the US and French production sites, covering direct materials, components, equipment, and selected indirect spend as defined in scope.
  • Consolidating volumes and leveraging global sourcing opportunities to optimize total cost of ownership (TCO)
  • Ensuring sourcing strategies are robust, competitive, and aligned with production and engineering needs.

Supplier Management & Performance

  • Leading supplier sourcing, qualification, negotiation, and contracting at a global level.
  • Defining and managing the global supplier panel, including strategic, critical, and risk-exposed suppliers.
  • Driving supplier performance management through clear KPIs (QCD, innovation, sustainability).
  • Developing long-term partnerships with strategic suppliers to support innovation, capacity, and reliability.

Cost, Value Creation & Risk Management

  • Leading continuous cost reduction and value creation initiatives, including should-cost analysis and productivity actions.
  • Anticipating and managing supply chain risks (single sourcing, geopolitical exposure, capacity constraints, financial health of suppliers).
  • Securing supply continuity for critical materials and technologies.

Cross-functional Collaboration & Business Support

  • Working closely with Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality, Finance, and EHS to ensure purchasing decisions support business and industrial objectives.
  • Supporting make-or-buy analyses, industrial footprint decisions, and new product introductions.
  • Acting as a key contributor to operational excellence and transformation initiatives.

Compliance & Ethics

  • Ensuring full compliance with CAMECA and AMETEK purchasing policies, ethical standards, and contractual requirements.
  • Promoting responsible purchasing practices, including sustainability, ESG considerations, and supplier code of conduct adherence.

Requirements

Education & experience:

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Purchasing, or Business.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in purchasing/procurement in an industrial, international environment.
  • Proven experience managing global suppliers and multi-site procurement.

Professional knowledge & abilities

  • Strong negotiation and contract management skills.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain constraints.
  • Ability to build and deploy global strategies.
  • Strong leadership and influence skills in a matrix organization.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (French is a strong plus).
  • Data-driven, structured, and results-oriented mindset.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.
