What is a GIS product manager?

A GIS Product Manager is a professional who oversees the development, launch, and ongoing improvement of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) products. They work at the intersection of technology, mapping, and business to ensure GIS products meet user needs and organization goals. Their responsibilities include gathering requirements, prioritizing features, collaborating with technical teams, and defining product strategy. GIS Product Managers often bridge the gap between technical GIS specialists and business stakeholders to deliver innovative mapping solutions. They also monitor market trends to keep products competitive and effective.

How does a GIS product manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product development lifecycle?

A GIS Product Manager regularly works with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, UX/UI designers, data analysts, and stakeholders, to ensure the successful delivery of geospatial products. Throughout the product development lifecycle, GIS Product Managers lead roadmap planning sessions, oversee project timelines, and coordinate testing and feedback loops to refine the product. This collaborative approach ensures that the final GIS solutions meet user needs and align with business objectives.
