You will operate with a high degree of independence, bridging high-level executive strategy with on-the-ground operational execution. This position is a Hybrid role that can be based in either our New York City or Washington, D.C. Responsibilities:
Program Leadership & Strategy
- Standardize Global Programs: Build, scale, and maintain a standardized travel and event security framework across the entire New York Times enterprise.
- Collaborate with teams to create and implement security policies that meet our Responsibility of Care.
- Vendor & Team Management: Coordinate, train, and support high-performing third-party security vendors, ensuring defined service-level agreements (SLAs) and budget compliance.
- Threat Intelligence: Stay ahead of emerging geopolitical threats, technological advancements, and industry best practices to continuously evolve the security program.
- Operational Mobility: Travel domestically and internationally (approximately 25-30%) to directly support high-profile events and operations.
Event Security Operations (70% of Core Efforts)
- On-Site Supervision: Lead security operations for major internal and external NYT events.
- Risk Assessments & Briefings: Conduct pre-event site walkthroughs and collaborate with marketing, events, and newsroom leads to design customized security, emergency response, and evacuation plans.
- Liaison & Partnership: Serve as the primary liaison between NYT, venue management, private security vendors, and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Dignitary & Talent Protection: Plan and manage specialized security support for VIPs, high-profile speakers, talent, and government officials attending NYT events.
Global Travel Security
- Travel Risk Management: Develop and promote a comprehensive travel security program, ensuring all global staff are trained, informed, and equipped for safe corporate travel.
- GSOC Integration: Partner with the Global Security Operations Center (GSOC) to leverage real-time intelligence, build risk-rating models, and monitor global events to track and safeguard traveling personnel.
- High-Risk Coordination: Standardize operational workflows and collaboration with the High-Risk Travel Team to support journalists deploying to complex environments.
- Crisis Response: Establish robust emergency protocols, in-country emergency contacts (including OSAC and local authorities), and medical/security evacuation procedures.
Protective Services Support
- Strategic Partnership: Serve as a core partner to the Director of Protective Services to secure the Publisher, CEO, masthead, and high-risk newsroom staff during external engagements.
- Stakeholder Alignment: Build trusted relationships with executive assistants, chiefs of staff, legal, and communications teams to ensure seamless executive security logistics.
- Close Protection Management: Oversee specialized third-party vendors, including close-protection personnel and secure transport drivers.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Basic Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree required.
- 10+ years of progressive experience combining event security management, corporate travel security, emergency response, and executive protection.
- Risk Management Expertise: Proven experience conducting comprehensive travel and event security risk assessments across diverse, multicultural, and international environments.
- Program Development: Demonstrated success, five plus years, building security frameworks against strict liability, compliance, and corporate business objectives.
