General Pump Company is seeking an experienced Manual Lathe Machinist to join our machine shop team. If you enjoy precision machining, solving unique machining challenges, and working with industrial equipment, this is an opportunity to build a long-term career with a stable company.
This is not a production machining environment. Every project is different, requiring critical thinking, craftsmanship, and pride in producing high-quality work. You'll machine, repair, and fabricate custom pump components used in industrial pumping systems while working alongside an experienced team.
What You'll Do
- Operate manual lathes, mills, VTLs, drill presses, and other manual machining equipment.
- Machine, repair, and fabricate shafts, pump heads, couplings, and custom pump components.
- Perform ID and OD threading operations.
- Straighten and thread shafts.
- Manufacture replacement parts through reverse engineering when prints are unavailable.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings.
- Set up and indicate workpieces using a 4-jaw chuck.
- Inspect finished components using precision measuring tools such as:
- Micrometers
- Calipers
- Dial indicators
- Build gauges and fixtures as needed to verify fit and function.
- Troubleshoot machining challenges and determine the best manufacturing approach.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety procedures.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- 2–3+ years of experience operating manual lathes
- Ability to independently set up work using a 4-jaw chuck
- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings
- Experience using precision measuring equipment
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Basic machining math skills
- Ability to work independently while maintaining high-quality standards
- Reliable, detail-oriented, and safety conscious
Preferred Experience
- Manual mills, VTLs, and drill presses
- Pipe threading and ID threading
- Pump repair or rotating equipment
- Industrial manufacturing or heavy equipment repair
Physical Requirements
- Stand for extended periods throughout the workday
- Lift and move machining materials and components safely
- Work in an industrial machine shop environment with exposure to machinery and moderate noise
