What is a general contractor?

General contractors are professionals or companies responsible for overseeing and managing construction projects from start to finish. General contractors serve as the main point of contact between clients and all parties involved in the construction process, ensuring quality and safety standards are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a general contractor?

To thrive as a General Contractor, you need a solid understanding of construction methods, project management, budgeting, and building codes, often supported by a relevant degree or significant hands-on experience. Familiarity with construction management software, estimating tools, and relevant safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. These abilities are crucial for delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget while maintaining quality standards.

What are some common challenges a general contractor might face when managing multiple subcontractors on a large construction project?

General Contractors often encounter challenges in coordinating schedules, ensuring consistent communication, and maintaining quality standards across multiple subcontractors. Delays from one subcontractor can impact the entire project timeline, so effective project management and contingency planning are essential. Additionally, General Contractors must regularly monitor progress, address conflicts or misunderstandings promptly, and ensure that all work complies with safety and regulatory requirements. Strong leadership and organizational skills are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering successful projects.

Job description

Job Description
Job Description

Not every estimating opportunity gives you the chance to help shape the future of a growing company.

This one does.

We're partnering with a highly respected commercial general contractor that has been building exceptional commercial projects for more than 40 years. As the company continues to grow and take on increasingly complex work, they've retained our services to help them identify an experienced Senior Commercial Construction Estimator who wants to do far more than simply prepare estimates.

This is an opportunity to become a key member of the team, influence how estimating is done, introduce new ideas and technology, and help shape the future of the estimating and preconstruction function.

If you're someone who enjoys improving processes, solving problems, and making a meaningful impact rather than simply maintaining the status quo, I'd welcome the opportunity to tell you more.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Prepare detailed estimates for a wide variety of commercial construction projects.
  • Work closely with operations, project management, business development, and finance throughout the preconstruction process.
  • Help improve and modernize estimating systems, workflows, and technology.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Visit project sites to better understand scope, constructability, and project requirements.
  • Support seamless project handoffs from preconstruction through operations.
  • Serve as a trusted resource to leadership on estimating strategy and project planning.

What We're Looking For

  • Approximately 5+ years of commercial estimating experience with a General Contractor.
  • Strong understanding of commercial construction methods and estimating best practices.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, well-thought-out estimates.
  • Someone who enjoys finding better, more efficient ways of doing things.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Project management experience is a plus.
  • Experience with estimating software and digital construction tools is highly desirable.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

This isn't simply another estimating position.

It's an opportunity to:

  • Help shape the future of the estimating department.
  • Introduce new ideas, technology, and process improvements.
  • Work directly with a leadership team that genuinely values new ideas and invests in developing its people.
  • Enjoy a collaborative, family-oriented culture where your contributions will be recognized.
  • Grow into increasing leadership responsibilities as the company continues to expand.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary of approximately $100,000–$125,000, depending on experience.
  • Annual performance bonus.
  • Company-provided SUV, including fuel, insurance, and maintenance.
  • Comprehensive medical and dental benefits.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Continuing education and professional development support.
  • Relocation assistance available for the right candidate.

If you're ready for a position where your experience, ideas, and leadership can truly make a difference, I'd welcome the opportunity to have a confidential conversation.
