Job description

United Way of East Central Iowa is seeking a detail-oriented and mission-driven Accountant to support our financial operations and help advance positive community impact. This role is responsible for managing core accounting functions, including financial reporting, accounts reconciliation, payroll processing, and campaign pledge administration, in accordance with GAAP standards.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience), 1-5 years of accounting experience, and strong technical skills in financial systems and Microsoft Office.

We're looking for someone who is analytical, highly organized, and committed to excellence, integrity, and collaboration. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with leadership, contribute to audits and budgeting processes, and play a vital role in ensuring the financial health and transparency of our organization.


Essential Job Functions

Execution of General Accounting Functions

  • Ensure accuracy and adherence to the Finance & Administration Department policy and procedure manual.
  • Complete month end closeout entries.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements.
  • Regularly prepare compensation reports and grant reporting summaries.
  • Deposit cash daily or as needed.
  • Reconcile and analyze key financial accounts monthly.

Campaign Processing

  • Assist in maintaining data integrity, including identifying duplicate records, deleting obsolete records, and coordinating constituent status updates.
  • Use Andar database and other technology platforms for information, reporting, and follow up, and maintain accurate and current data in these platforms.
  • Administer annual campaign pledge processing and other campaign-related tasks.
  • Maintain accuracy and confidentiality of records including but not limited to contact lists, membership rosters, database records, manuals and files, and other administrative documents.

Organizational Payroll

  • Process biweekly payroll, including related journal entries and payment of employee benefits.
  • Act as liaison with 3rd party payroll processor and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Effectively train and communicate with staff on all payroll matters.

Support CFO/VP, Finance & Operations

  • Reconcile endowment fund balances and prepare reports for various committees.
  • Provide support for the annual external audit, 990, time study process and budget process.

Education

  • Level of Education: Bachelor's Degree (Required)
  • Work Experience: 1-5 years (Required)
  • Education Requirement: 7+ years of related experience will be accepted in place of required degree
  • Preferred field(s) of study: Accounting, Finance, or Business
