The Position

Surgical Device Specialist (SDS), Ophthalmology – Pacific North West

The Opportunity

As a Surgical Device Specialist (SDS) you will be integral to successfully delivering the Ophthalmology Vision, working closely with healthcare providers on the introduction of SUSVIMO (Port Delivery System) into the market. You will deeply understand the specific needs of retinal surgeons in their therapeutic area to identify and address their clinical and business goals and challenges in support of improved patient experience, optimal surgical outcomes, and improved quality of care.

You will drive clinical demand and provide training to retinal surgeons, following the Ophthalmology vision and PDS strategic plan. You will embrace innovative approaches, adapts to changing situations, sets and achieves targets, and motivates cross-functional teams. Focused on developing customer partnerships, you will aim to improve patient care and surgical outcomes while establishing Genentech as a trusted leader. You will report to a Surgical Device Director, who reports to the National Director, Surgical Device and Ophthalmology Portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Education and Surgical Support: Provide technical education to surgeons and staff on PDS usage before, during, and after procedures, ensuring clear and concise instruction in and out of the OR. Support surgical and refill procedures daily, and lead training sessions to enhance understanding of SUSVIMO implant and refill procedures.

  • Customer Relationship Management: Maintain high retention rates of current accounts through outstanding service. Build and maintain strong, lasting relationships, conduct quarterly business reviews, and leverage marketing materials for consultative selling.

  • Business Development and Lead Generation: Actively canvass to build a qualified lead funnel, convert high potential leads, and consistently achieve territorial quotas. Integrate economic value messages into consultative selling.

  • Strategic Execution and Collaboration: Participate in the formulation of national marketing strategies for PDS and execute local tactics. Liaise with field partners to maximize account potential through practice development initiatives and clinical expertise.

  • Fluency and Compliance: Demonstrate fluency in the Ophthalmology Portfolio, competitive landscape, reimbursement, and Genentech Patient Support Services. Communicate clinical information and payer coverage knowledge within compliance guidelines, and triage to internal partners when appropriate.

  • Leadership and Analytical Skills: Thrive in a consultative selling environment, independently translating strategic direction into actionable plans. Exhibit strong analytical skills to shape strategies, advanced communication and presentation skills, and the ability to thrive in an ambiguous, transformational environment.

This is a field based role, it will cover the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, & Montana. It is preferred that candidates live in the territory for consideration.

Who you are:

  • 3+ years in surgical device procedure training

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent surgical device industry experience

  • Be proficient in GCP (Good Clinical Practice), Adverse Event reporting and ICH (International Conference on Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use).

  • Maintain a valid driver’s license, all necessary certifications, and vendor credentialing - Travel Requirement: within territory (40%), national and conferences (weekends and evenings required)

  • In addition to passing Genentech's background screening, the employee must submit to and pass additional background screening as required by some institutions and health facility sales accounts (additional screening requests may include but are not limited to background checks, immunization, TB, HIV, hepatitis, and drug screening).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years selling experience in biotech industry/pharmaceutical or biotech field sales strongly preferred

  • Class III Medical Device experience strongly preferred

  • Ophthalmology therapeutic area experience

  • MBA or other related graduate level degree

  • Marketing experience in other relevant industries

  • Alternative Combinations/Other Professional Credentials: Ophthalmic surgery expertise, Designation as Optometrist, Optician or Ophthalmic technician

There are no relocation benefits available for this position.

Complies with all laws, regulations, policies and procedures that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

This is a field-based position and overnight travel may be required. This position requires significant driving of either a company provided or personal vehicle as well as prolonged periods of sitting, both of which are part of the essential duties and responsibilities of the role. As a result, Genentech, Inc. (Company) from time to time will check your motor vehicle record for purposes of determining your eligibility for driving a Company vehicle or driving any vehicle on Company business.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, or Montana is $96,300.00 – $178,800.00. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position is eligible to earn incentive compensation that is calculated and paid in accordance with the applicable Incentive Compensation Plan for the role.
