Reports To: Production Supervisor / Manufacturing Manager

Travel: Not Applicable

Position Summary

Responsible for the setup, operation, and in-process quality verification of CNC bevel gear cutting and grinding machines. Produces straight, spiral, and hypoid bevel gears while ensuring compliance with dimensional, surface finish, and contact pattern specifications.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Operations

  • Set up CNC bevel gear cutting machines (Gleason, Klingelnberg, Oerlikon)

  • Select and install cutters (face mill, face hob) or grinding wheels; verify geometry and alignment

  • Enter, verify, and modify CNC programs and machine parameters (cradle angle, tilt, swivel, offsets)

  • Set up gear blanks, arbors, and fixtures ensuring proper alignment

  • Perform trial cuts and first-article contact pattern analysis; adjust settings accordingly

  • Execute efficient changeovers and minimize downtime

  • Operate auxiliary equipment (lapping machines, gear testers, wash systems)

Quality & Inspection

  • Interpret gear drawings and data (pitch angle, spiral angle, backlash, etc.)

  • Perform inspections using micrometers, dial indicators, CMM, and gear testers

  • Verify tooth contact, spacing, and geometry per AGMA/DIN standards

  • Identify and document non-conformance; support corrective actions

  • Maintain accurate records (setup sheets, SPC data, inspection logs)

Maintenance & Safety

  • Perform preventive maintenance (lubrication, coolant checks, cleaning)

  • Monitor machine condition and report issues promptly

  • Maintain 5S standards and organized work area

  • Follow safety protocols including PPE, LOTO, and machine guarding

  • Support continuous improvement and lean initiatives

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of CNC bevel gear setup/operation experience

  • Ability to read gear drawings, GD&T, and gear summary data

  • Strong knowledge of bevel gear geometry (pitch cone, spiral angle, hypoid offset, etc.)

  • Experience with contact pattern analysis and machine adjustments

  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools (micrometers, CMM, gear testers)

  • Familiarity with CNC controls and machine programming (Gleason/Klingelnberg or similar)

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple setups

Preferred

  • Experience with Gleason Phoenix or Klingelnberg machines

  • Knowledge of GEMS or KIMoS software

  • Familiarity with AGMA / ISO bevel gear standards

  • Experience in automotive, aerospace, or industrial gear manufacturing

  • Apprenticeship, vocational training, or machining degree

  • Exposure to SPC, Lean, and 5S practices

Working Conditions

  • Manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, fluids, and machinery

  • Standing for extended periods; lifting up to 50 lbs

  • PPE required; possible overtime/weekend work

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly pay: $25 - $33/hr (DOE) + shift differential
