What does a gas controller do?

The duties of a gas controller include operating pipelines to ensure customers receive proper gas or oil flow requirements. As a gas controller, you work with gas and oil companies to ensure major problems do not occur, monitor live pipeline pressure data, and identify and respond to abnormal flow volume and emergency readings. You adjust settings in gas chambers like temperature, pressure, and flow rate. You record and review records of the overall operation, and test equipment to ensure accuracy. Other responsibilities include maintaining, repairing, and cleaning equipment, or hiring a crew to do this. You reinforce safety guidelines, conduct safety checks, and oversee oil and gas transport. Some collaboration with other workers occurs, especially while problem-solving.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a gas controller?

Gas Controllers need a solid understanding of pipeline operations, pressure management, and safety protocols, typically supported by a degree in engineering, physical sciences, or relevant technical training. Familiarity with SCADA systems, gas measurement software, and regulatory compliance tools is essential. Attention to detail, effective communication, and strong decision-making skills help Gas Controllers respond quickly to operational changes and emergencies. These abilities are critical for ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable delivery of natural gas while minimizing risks and regulatory violations.

What are common challenges faced by gas controllers, and how are they typically managed?

Gas Controllers often face challenges such as managing fluctuating demand, responding to pipeline emergencies, and coordinating with maintenance teams to minimize service disruptions. They must constantly monitor system pressures and flows, making real-time decisions to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. Effective communication, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential to navigate these challenges successfully. Regular training and collaboration with engineers and field technicians help Gas Controllers stay prepared for unexpected situations.

What is the difference between Gas Controller vs Pipeline Operator?

Industry UsageOil and gas companies, utilitiesOil and gas, energy companies
Job FocusMonitoring and controlling gas flowMaintaining pipeline integrity and flow

Both Gas Controllers and Pipeline Operators work in the oil and gas industry, often within the same companies. Gas Controllers primarily monitor and manage gas flow through control rooms, ensuring safety and efficiency. Pipeline Operators focus on the physical maintenance and operation of pipelines, often in the field. While their roles differ, they collaborate closely to ensure safe and efficient energy transportation.

How much does a gas controller make?

A gas controller typically earns between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often require knowledge of safety protocols, monitoring equipment, and may work shifts in industrial or energy settings.

How to become a gas controller?

To become a gas controller, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with training in gas operations and safety procedures. Relevant skills include attention to detail, communication, and knowledge of monitoring equipment; certifications in gas safety or control systems can enhance job prospects.

Job description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the SCADA/PLC Controls Technician ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the instrumentation, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and HMI/SCADA systems across the company’s three gas storage sites. This is a hybrid role that combines hands‑on maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration with controls programming—developing and modifying ladder‑logic PLC programs and building and maintaining HMI applications in AVEVA and Wonderware. The successful candidate is a self‑motivated, hands‑on individual with strong team skills who can both keep field equipment running and improve the control systems behind it. The role includes analyzing mechanical and electrical designs, building sequences of operation, implementing them in functioning PLC programs and SCADA screens, and supporting the testing, commissioning, and ongoing upkeep of those systems.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities Maintenance, Calibration & Field Operations
  • Perform hands‑on troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical and instrumentation equipment across all three storage sites, identifying opportunities for improvement and optimization.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and repair instrumentation and control equipment, including valve actuators, VFDs, transmitters, and process equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of calibration and equipment performance as required for compliance systems.
  • Maintain SCADA, PLC, and HMI hardware and software, along with associated computers and network equipment.
  • Understand and perform safety responsibilities such as hazard identification, equipment lockout/tagout, emergency response, and implementation of safe work procedures.
Programming, Integration & Documentation
  • Develop, modify, test, and document PLC programs using ladder logic.
  • Build, configure, and maintain HMI/SCADA applications in AVEVA and Wonderware System Platform.
  • Translate mechanical and electrical designs into sequences of operation, and implement those sequences into functioning PLC programs and user‑friendly SCADA screens.
  • Design and implement system protection schemes for process equipment.
  • Prepare and revise control logic documentation, drawings, and equipment specifications; maintain accurate product documentation and records.
  • Support testing and commissioning of new and modified control systems.
General
  • Adhere to company and applicable client / regulatory engineering standards and procedures.
  • Ensure effective communication with operations, maintenance, and management staff.
  • Participate in ongoing performance improvement, including site‑specific and equipment‑specific training and job progression.
  • Provide support across all three storage sites; willing to work extra hours and be on call when required.
Qualifications Required
  • Instrumentation and electrical qualifications and/or equivalent work history. Experience level is open (DOE); candidates from entry‑level through senior will be considered based on demonstrated ability.
  • Hands‑on experience programming PLCs in ladder logic.
  • Experience building or maintaining HMI/SCADA applications (AVEVA and/or Wonderware System Platform).
