Job description

A Garden Center Manager at Sargent’s is responsible for the operations of a store on a daily, weekly, and annual basis. This Store Manager reports to the Retail GM and is fully responsible for implementing the Vision of the store with their retail team. Details are of high importance.

A successful candidate for the Garden Center Store Manager is results-driven, will enhance customer satisfaction, will meet sales and profitability goals, and will manage staff effectively.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. The adherence of the store to:
    1. Company Vision, Mission and Values
    2. Executing the vision of the Retail GM (in conjunction with the retail team).
    3. Store performance in growth, gross margin, and Net Profit
    4. The store’s benefits to the other departments of Sargent’s.
  2. Maintain and enhance a positive, fun team-oriented culture at your store and companywide.
  3. Develop a system for handling customer concerns, including being the store voice for complaints that require an upper management response.
  4. Work with the retail team (store managers, HR, Buyer, Marketing, and Visual Merchandising) cooperatively to implement an unparalleled customer experience.
  5. Develop employees under management to their maximum potential. Give employees clear direction and responsibilities, then allow them the freedom to succeed on their own.
  6. Develop a system that does not require minute-to-minute attention to the operation of the store for the majority of the time.
  7. Work with the retail GM to develop and improve store processes and management to a high level of detail.
  8. Be the final decision maker on hiring/firing and employee course correction of employees at their location.
  9. Work with the mindset that Sargent’s is all one company. If it is required for a store to sacrifice your objectives for the greater good of the company, that will be supported.
  10. Work time on the sales floor of the store to both gauge store performance and provide support to the retail staff. However, at least 50% of work time should be free to work “on” the store vs. “in” the store. Each week a minimum of two 4-hour shifts on the sales floor of your store are required. During this time your foremost commitment is to the operations of the store.
  11. Work with retail GM and hiring/training manager to staff and schedule the store for both exemplary customer service and minimizing labor costs.
  12. Track key business performance metrics (KPI’s).
  13. Make impactful purchasing decisions regarding both inventory and non-inventory Items.

Core Retail Principles:

  • Positive, team-oriented environment.
  • Store cleanliness.
  • Impeccable product quality. If you wouldn’t buy it, get it off the sales floor.
  • A dramatic display of products.
  • Sargent’s is a premium brand. Maintain premium products and work to maintain a high gross margin on these products.
  • Ensure that all assistant managers are equipped to succeed in their responsibilities.
  • Willingness to try new things and take calculated risks.

We Have:

  • A desire to do our best. We do not come to work every day to be average.
  • A culture of respect and diversity. Sargent’s understands that we succeed or fail as one.
  • A vision of prosperity. You have goals for your life. We do too. We want those goals to be closer tomorrow than they are today.
  • A fun environment working with others who are passionate about plants.

You Have:

  • A knack for communication. You thrive in a team environment but can provide strong leadership.
  • A proclivity toward the natural world. You love being outdoors but don’t mind office time.
  • Possess a positive attitude and enjoy being around others.
  • Confidence in hiring new employees, as well as involvement in promotion or corrective management of current employees.
  • Willingness to collaborate with all staff members be it managers, peers, or those under your supervision.
  • A love for taking on robust problems with short deadlines. We sell living plants. This requires short deadlines and quick turnaround.
Compensation & Benefits:

Pay range: salary position $65,000 – $80,000 annually.

Employee discount which includes up to 30% off plant materials.

Retirement Plan through a 401k. Sargent’s offers a match up to 4%.

Health Insurance options for Eligible Employee and Families (Sargent’s pays for 75% of employee monthly cost).

Paid Time Off (PTO). Eligible Sargent’s employees will earn paid time off.

Sargent’s is more than a garden center, it’s a place where careers grow. If you’re ready to lead with knowledge, grow your skills, and help our community plant with confidence, we’d love to meet you.
