Job Description
The Product Owner II - BI is a highly technical product leadership role embedded within a modern data and analytics product team. This role requires deep fluency in data platforms, data engineering practices, and BI technologies, paired with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, outcome-focused discussions with business partners.
The Product Owner works across architecture, infrastructure, and data engineering teams, actively participating in and leading technical discussions related to data design, integration, quality, and performance, while also partnering closely with business stakeholders to understand their data needs and business problems in their language. This role owns the end-to-end delivery and evolution of BI and data products that enable trusted, scalable, and actionable insights across the organization.
Technical Product Ownership
  • Own the vision, roadmap, and backlog for BI and data products, including data pipelines, analytical datasets, semantic models, dashboards, and reporting platforms.
  • Participate in and lead technical discussions with data engineering, architecture, and infrastructure teams regarding solution design, data flows, system dependencies, scalability, and performance.
  • Define and prioritize work across database platforms, cloud data services, and data integration tooling to ensure reliable, high-quality analytics delivery.
  • Ensure technical solutions align with enterprise data architecture, security, and governance standards.

Business Partnership & Translation
  • Serve as the primary interface between technical delivery teams and business partners.
  • Translate business problems, KPIs, and analytical questions into clear, technically sound product requirements and user stories.
  • Communicate data concepts, tradeoffs, and limitations in business-friendly language while maintaining technical rigor.
  • Lead discovery sessions to define success metrics, reporting needs, and analytical outcomes.

Data Engineering & BI Enablement
  • Partner closely with data engineers and analytics engineers working with relational and cloud-based data platforms.
  • Ensure adherence to data engineering best practices including dimensional data modeling, analytics-ready datasets, and governed metrics.
  • Guide prioritization related to data quality, observability, lineage, and reliability.
  • Validate that BI solutions meet standards for accuracy, usability, performance, and scalability.

Agile Delivery & Execution
  • Maintain a refined and prioritized backlog with well-defined user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Collaborate with agile teams throughout design, development, testing, and release.
  • Review and accept technical deliverables, ensuring alignment with business intent and architectural expectations.
  • Identify risks, dependencies, and constraints related to data availability, system integration, or infrastructure.

Modern Data Platform & Innovation
  • Contribute to a data product ecosystem leveraging current, industry-leading technologies.
  • Support the adoption of cloud-native data services, automated data pipelines, and CI/CD practices.
  • Partner with engineering teams to enable automation, scalability, and reliability across data integrations.
  • Support exploration and adoption of AI-enabled analytics, advanced data tooling, and modern data platform patterns.

Technical Environment & Practices
This role operates within a modern data and analytics ecosystem, including:
  • Databases & Cloud Platforms: SQL Server, AWS S3, AWS Redshift (or similar cloud data platforms)
  • Data Integration & Orchestration: ETL/ELT tools such as SSIS, CData, dbt, Astronomer
  • Data Engineering Practices: Dimensional data modeling, analytics-ready transformations, semantic layers
  • Data Quality & Observability: Data validation, monitoring, reconciliation, and lineage best practices
  • BI & Visualization Tools: Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or equivalent
  • Engineering Enablement: Automated CI/CD pipelines, cloud services, and modern integration strategies

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Information Systems, Analytics, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-6 years of experience in a Product Owner, Product Manager, Business Analyst, or Analytics role within a data-intensive environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of SQL and relational data structures.
  • Demonstrated experience working closely with data engineering and technical architecture teams.
  • Proven ability to balance technical depth with business communication.
  • Hands-on experience supporting products built on cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Databricks).
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT frameworks and modern data pipeline architectures.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum product teams.
  • Product Owner or Agile certifications (CSPO, PSPO, SAFe PO/PM).
  • Exposure to AI-driven analytics, automation, or advanced data tooling.
