Game Server Engineer information

How does a Game Server Engineer typically collaborate with game designers and client developers during the development process?

Game Server Engineers work closely with both game designers and client developers to ensure seamless integration between server-side logic and client-side gameplay. They regularly participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss game mechanics, network protocols, and synchronization requirements. Effective communication with designers helps translate gameplay ideas into robust server features, while collaboration with client developers ensures data consistency and smooth player experiences. This teamwork is crucial for maintaining game stability and delivering new features efficiently.

What are Game Server Engineers?

Game Server Engineers are specialized software developers responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the backend infrastructure that powers multiplayer and online features in video games. They work on server-side logic, networking, scalability, and security to ensure smooth gameplay experiences for players worldwide. Their role often involves collaborating with game developers, network engineers, and QA teams to implement features like matchmaking, leaderboards, and real-time multiplayer interactions. Game Server Engineers are crucial for ensuring stability, low latency, and the ability to handle large numbers of concurrent users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Server Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Server Engineer, you need strong programming skills—typically in languages like C++, C#, or Java—along with a solid understanding of network protocols and real-time multiplayer systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), database management, version control systems, and experience with game engines or dedicated server frameworks are common technical requirements. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you efficiently diagnose issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for building scalable, reliable, and engaging online gaming experiences.

About Shockbyte

Have you ever jumped into a Minecraft world, battled in ARK, or built in Rust? Chances are, you've already played on a Shockbyte server. With 60+ games supported and hundreds of thousands of players worldwide, we're one of the largest game server hosting companies on the planet.

We're not just building servers - we're building the future of multiplayer. At Shockbyte, you'll join a high-performing global team that's passionate about making game server hosting seamless for players and studios everywhere.

About the Role

We're looking for a Business Development Manager to lead Shockbyte's expansion in the B2B space. This role will be responsible for building new partnerships with game studios, driving adoption of Shockbyte for Game Studios (our orchestration platform), and acting as the primary contact for many of our closest partners.

The role combines business development and partnerships management: from pitching and closing exclusive POGS deals, to nurturing relationships, to representing Shockbyte at major gaming events around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Build and manage the game studio sales pipeline, from lead generation to closing partnerships.
  • Secure exclusive POGS partnerships where Shockbyte becomes the primary server host.
  • Drive adoption of Shockbyte for Game Studios, our orchestration platform, across new and existing studios.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for key partners, strengthening long-term relationships until account managers are onboarded.
  • Attend global gaming events (GDC, Gamescom, etc.), running back-to-back meetings and demos.
  • Manage contracts and agreements with game studios and other external partners.
  • Deliver professional presentations, proposals, and demos to executives and developers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience in business development, partnerships, or sales, ideally in gaming or technology.
  • Familiarity with the gaming industry, including events such as GDC or Gamescom.
  • Outgoing and personable - comfortable with constant networking, introductions, and back-to-back meetings.
  • Skilled in presentations, demos, and closing deals.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to independently build and maintain a structured sales pipeline.
  • Organised and detail-oriented, able to manage travel, meetings, and follow-ups effectively.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with media relations or PR.
  • Background in SaaS, cloud, or server infrastructure.
  • Existing industry network of gaming contacts.
  • Multilingual communication skills.

Benefits

  • Hybrid Work - Flexibility to work from home or the office.
  • Flexible Working Hours - Work around your peak productivity times.
  • Career Growth - Clear progression pathways and long-term opportunities.
  • Professional Development Budget - Courses, certifications, and conferences.
  • Home Office / Coworking Stipend - Create your perfect workspace.
  • Virtual Team Events - Trivia, escape rooms, and epic game nights.
  • Company Merch Packs - Hoodies, mugs, and stickers designed for our team.
  • Travel Opportunities - Represent Shockbyte at global industry events.
  • Free Game Server Hosting - Spin up your own servers and play on us.
  • Esports & Gaming Events - Free tickets to tournaments and expos.
