Job description

Standard Job Description
Lockheed Martin Space is seeking a Level 4 Parts Engineer to support the selection, application, qualification, control, and lifecycle management of parts used on commercial space programs.
The Parts Engineer will provide technical expertise in the evaluation and implementation of electrical, electronic, electromechanical (EEE), mechanical, materials, and process parts for commercial spaceflight hardware. This position works closely with design engineering, systems engineering, reliability, quality, manufacturing, supply chain, procurement, and suppliers to ensure parts meet program requirements while balancing performance, reliability, cost, schedule, availability, manufacturability, and customer expectations.
The successful candidate will independently execute moderately complex to complex parts engineering assignments, provide technical recommendations, identify and mitigate parts-related risks, and support program execution from design through production and delivery in a team setting.
This position is well suited for an experienced engineer who can operate independently, take ownership of their work, influence cross-functional decisions, who is detail-oriented, and apply sound engineering judgment in a fast-paced commercial space environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform parts engineering activities supporting commercial spacecraft and spaceflight hardware.
  • Evaluate and select EEE, mechanical, materials, and process parts based on program requirements and intended application.
  • Review part specifications, manufacturer data, qualification information, reliability data, and applicable industry standards.
  • Develop and maintain program Parts List, parts databases, parts control documentation, and associated engineering records.
  • Evaluate proposed alternate, substitute, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), non-standard, and obsolete parts.

  • Support component and material failure investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Review supplier documentation and provide technical input to supplier selection and qualification activities.
  • Support engineering change requests, nonconformances, deviations, and technical dispositions involving parts.
  • Participate in design reviews, parts/materials/process reviews, failure reviews, manufacturing readiness reviews, and other program technical reviews.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers and serve as a technical resource within the parts engineering organization.

The information below reflects the standard job description for this position:
Conducts or participates in the selection, evaluation, qualification, testing and failure analysis of Electrical, Electronic, Electromechanical and Electro-optical (EEEE) Components. Plans, directs, reviews and coordinates the preparation of project documentation to ensure customer contract and company requirements are met. Prepares EEEE Component Source Control Drawings (SCDs), evaluates vendors and analyzes EEEE Component test reports. The Component Engineer is responsible for the oversight of Subcontractor EEEE Components, generating/reviewing/approving Non-Standard Part Approval Requests (NSPARs) at Parts, Materials and Process Control Board (PMPCB) meetings, reviewing and approving engineering drawings and SCDs, participating/leading PMP issue resolutions and assisting/leading failure analysis under the EEEE Components domain.
Basic Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in parts engineering, component engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience evaluating and selecting parts for aerospace, space, defense, automotive, medical, telecommunications, or other high-reliability products.
  • Working knowledge of EEE, materials, and processes.
  • Experience interpreting component specifications, manufacturer data, qualification reports, and engineering requirements.
  • Experience balancing technical risk with commercial program cost and schedule objectives.

Desired Skills
• Master's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Experience with commercial space hardware development and production.
• Experience with COTS and industrial-grade components and establishing appropriate application and qualification approaches.
• Experience with EEE parts including semiconductors, integrated circuits, capacitors, resistors, connectors, relays, switches, sensors, or electromechanical components.
• Familiarity with applicable JEDEC, SAE, ASTM, or commercial industry standards.
• Experience with supplier technical evaluations and component manufacturer interactions.
• Experience supporting production programs and rapid development environments.
• Familiarity with engineering configuration management and product lifecycle management systems.
• Experience balancing technical risk with commercial program cost and schedule objectives.
• Detail-oriented with a strong sense of ownership
• Proficient in Excel
• Basic understanding of data analysis (e.g interpreting data trends and outliers)
• Manufacturing part (EEE) and assembly (CCA) and understanding process controls
• Cross-collaboration experience with engineering, manufacturing, quality, procurement, supply chain, and/or supplier organizations
• Soft skill: capable of working autonomous but can also be team oriented, strong sense of ownership
• Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice
