What is a game developer?

As a game developer, you write the code for video game software. Your code, combined with the work of other developers, brings video games to life on computers and gaming consoles. Your responsibilities are to design core game features and to collaborate with a team of other developers, graphic designers, and artists. Your job duties include game testing, debugging, and production in all aspects of gaming—player character creation, non-player characters, backgrounds, and gameplay. Being a gamer yourself gives you a solid understanding of the importance of game mechanics and storytelling.

What does a game developer do?

A game developer is responsible for designing, creating, and programming video games for computers, consoles, or mobile devices. Their work involves coding, testing, and debugging game software, as well as collaborating with artists, designers, and other team members to bring a game concept to life. Game developers may specialize in areas like gameplay programming, graphics, or artificial intelligence, and often use game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine to build their projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a game developer?

To thrive as a Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, C#, or Java), a solid understanding of computer graphics, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, version control systems, and sometimes certifications in these platforms are commonly required. Creative problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this field. These abilities are crucial for building engaging, technically robust games and collaborating successfully within multidisciplinary development teams.

What are some common challenges game developers face when working on large team projects?

Game developers working on large team projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating across multiple disciplines (programming, art, design, audio), ensuring clear communication, and managing dependencies between different parts of the game. Balancing creative vision with technical constraints and deadlines can also be demanding. Adapting to shifting priorities and integrating feedback from playtesting are key aspects of the collaborative process, making strong teamwork and flexibility essential in this role.

Job description

This Opportunity
Sunrise Engineering is seeking a full-time Engineer in Training (EIT) to join our Civil Design group and work in our Star Valley, Wyoming office. Our talented team of 500 professionals takes pride in a collaborative approach that ensures project success for clients and communities. With a passion for top-quality solutions and cost-effective outcomes, our experts thrive personally and professionally.
Who is Sunrise Engineering?
Sunrise Engineering, a regional leader in professional engineering and consulting services in the Intermountain West, is dedicated to excellence and lasting client, community, and employee relationships. We hold 25 offices across the states of Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho committed to creating solutions that work and relationships that last. Join our dynamic team at Sunrise Engineering to make a meaningful impact on future-shaping projects.
Make a Lasting Impact
A Civil Engineer-in-Training (EIT) provides both strategic and operational support to service center managers throughout the organization. We are looking for candidates who are:
Engineering Rockstar. A day in the life of a Sunrise engineer-in-training (EIT) is never the same as you work with a range of differing projects. Essential to our team, you'll work on a variety of projects from start to finish-helping project managers set budgets, basemap existing sites and utilities, collect field data, and lay the groundwork for successful designs. EITs play a key role in developing feasibility studies, master plans, and conceptual designs, while turning ideas into detailed plans that clearly communicate design intent to contractors and owners. You'll get hands-on experience preparing drawings, grading and pipe layouts, hydrologic and hydraulic models, roadway designs, specifications, and impact analyses, and much more. Along the way, you'll also gain valuable field experience through construction observation and administration-helping you connect design with real-world results and grow toward professional licensure.
A solid, reliable colleague. Verbal and written communication skills with both clients and your team are essential for EITs. You will collaborate with various engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure the seamless integration of design elements, details, changes, and full execution of projects. A good EIT is a great communicator, accountable, teachable, and responsible. In this position you will feel ownership over your project, drawings, and plans, especially as you see them get built in real life and move from cradle to grave in the project life-cycle.
Certified and Experienced. For this role, we are looking for someone who knows their stuff. A four-year degree from an accredited civil engineering program, passed your FE exam, and Civil 3D/CAD experience will make you a very strong candidate.
Picture yourself here? We encourage you to apply whether your experience aligns with every qualification or not. We're focused on cultivating a community of people who can grow with us, and you might be the person we're looking for, even if you don't realize it yet.
Our Offerings:
  • 4 weeks of PTO to ensure you have the balance you need, with one week already in the bank ready to use on day 1
  • 401k options, with a company match, and you're fully vested on your first day
  • Nine paid holidays, you choose which holidays you want to observe to connect with friends and family
  • Full benefits package including Health, Dental and Vision along with a company HSA match to keep you at your best
  • Company sponsored short-term disability and term life insurance
  • Long-term disability, cancer, and accident insurance for a secure future
  • Tuition reimbursement and mentorship opportunities for your own professional growth and development
  • Incentive bonus program to keep you on your game
