Game Art Designers are creative professionals responsible for designing and creating the visual elements of video games, including characters, environments, textures, and user interfaces. They work closely with game developers and other artists to ensure the game's visual style aligns with the overall vision and gameplay. Game Art Designers use a combination of traditional art skills and digital tools to bring game worlds to life, making the gaming experience engaging and immersive for players.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a game art designer?

To thrive as a Game Art Designer, you need a strong background in visual design, 2D/3D art creation, and a solid portfolio demonstrating your artistic skills, usually supported by a degree in art, design, or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk Maya, Blender, and game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, collaboration, and effective communication are vital soft skills that help bring game concepts to life and work seamlessly with development teams. Lecturer in Game Design & Development

Join Us in Shaping the Future of Games
The College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC) at the University at Albany is launching an exciting new chapter—and we’re looking for a passionate, forward-thinking Lecturer in Game Design & Development (GDD) to help lead the way.

As part of our growing Information Sciences & Technology Department, this role offers a unique opportunity to be a foundational voice in a vibrant, interdisciplinary program that blends creativity, technology, and innovation. We’re not just teaching students how to make games—we’re empowering them to explore how games can shape culture, solve problems, and drive change.

What You’ll Do:

  • Teach a range of GDD courses, potentially including game programming, game art, game technology, UI/UX for games, game studies, the business of games, and more.
  • Mentor and advise students, helping them grow as designers, developers, and thinkers.
  • Contribute to the life of the program through service, co-curricular activities, and collaborative projects.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary research and client-based projects that bring real-world experience into the classroom.

Why This Role is Special:
You won’t just be teaching—you’ll be helping to shape a bold, creative, and collaborative program from the ground up. This is a chance to work with a team that values experimentation, diversity of thought, and the power of games to inspire and connect.

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • A strong foundation in game design and development, whether through teaching, industry experience, or both.
  • A vision for how games can be used in innovative, interdisciplinary ways.
  • A desire to help build something meaningful and lasting for students and the broader community.
