Remote Xbox Game information

What are some common challenges faced when working as a remote Xbox game developer, and how can they be overcome?

Remote Xbox game developers often face challenges such as coordinating with a distributed team, managing version control across large codebases, and ensuring effective communication with designers, artists, and QA testers. Overcoming these obstacles typically involves using collaborative tools like version control systems (e.g., Git), regular video meetings, and project management platforms to keep everyone aligned. Proactively seeking feedback and maintaining clear documentation also help ensure that development progresses smoothly, even when team members are in different time zones.

What is a Remote Xbox Game Tester?

A Remote Xbox Game Tester is a professional who plays Xbox games from a remote location to identify bugs, glitches, and other issues before the game is released to the public. Their primary role is to provide feedback to developers about gameplay, graphics, sound, and overall user experience. Testers document their findings, often using specialized software, and may also suggest improvements. This position usually requires attention to detail, good communication skills, and a passion for gaming. Remote testers work from home or another location rather than at the game development studio.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Xbox Game Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Xbox Game Tester, you need strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and a solid understanding of gaming platforms, typically backed by experience with Xbox consoles and familiarity with various game genres. Knowledge of bug tracking systems like JIRA, proficiency with test case documentation, and sometimes ISTQB certification are commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work independently are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure high-quality feedback, effective collaboration with development teams, and ultimately a better gaming experience for end users.

Job description

Founded by games industry veterans, Rushdown was created with a simple philosophy in mind: We believe that when talented developers are consistently challenged and given clear ownership of their work, extraordinary things will happen. As a co-dev game studio, we now focus on solving some of the most difficult problems that face multiplayer games - and we bring our experience working on games like PUBG, League of Legends, and Rocket League with us. We truly love the work we do and we want to funnel our passion and expertise into features and games that billions of players will enjoy worldwide.
Our Role
Rushdown Studios is looking for an experienced Game Build Engineer to join us in support of an existing partner studio! In this role, you'll work alongside our existing team to improve infrastructure reliability and automate infrastructure creation, builds, and deployments for a large-scale game development project.
Our ideal candidate is a self-motivated and demonstrated team player with the ability to juggle and jump between different tasks as necessary.
Work Location: Rushdown Studios is based in Saratoga Springs, NY and we have a strong preference for local candidates willing to work from our office on a hybrid basis (i.e., Tuesday-Thursday) or fully remote candidates in the Eastern United States. However, we're always open to expanding our list of remote-eligible states for the right candidate, as well.
Responsibilities
  • Implement and maintain build systems for multiple target platforms (e.g., PC, Xbox, PlayStation).
  • Deploy infrastructure-as-code for cloud resources using tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, Azure Bicep, or Azure Resource Manager templates.
  • Design and develop CI/CD pipelines for game builds and deployments.
  • Automate game asset packaging and distribution workflows.
  • Optimize build times and artifact management for large game projects.

Requirements
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines in TeamCity for game development projects.
  • Familiarity with version control systems for large binary assets.
  • Proficiency in automation tools (e.g., MSBuild, FastBuild, Incredibuild).
  • Experience scripting with languages like Python, PowerShell, or Groovy.
  • Understanding of game packaging and deployment requirements for different platforms.
  • Experience compiling code and/or managing pipelines that compile code.
  • Ability to debug unexpected issues that arise during development.
  • Experience working with cloud providers (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCP).
  • Willingness to selflessly put player experiences first - before even your own code and ego.
  • Proactive approach to communication, particularly when it comes to unblocking yourself and navigating obstacles as part of a team.

Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience with build systems like Jenkins, TeamCity, or Azure DevOps, specifically for game development projects.
  • Experience with game engine build pipelines (e.g., in Unreal, Unity, or proprietary engines).
  • Knowledge of game development workflows and asset management.
  • General understanding of C-family programming languages.
  • Previous work using version control for game development (e.g., Perforce, Git LFS).

Benefits:
  • Compensation: $125,000-150,000/year. Please note that final base pay will ultimately depend upon a combination of factors, including your prior experience, general qualifications, and broader skill set.
  • 9 Paid Holidays plus Flexible PTO and Annual Winter Break Closure
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Annual Video Game Budget
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Paid Parental Leave

EEO Statement
At Rushdown Studios, we believe that we're made better by each of the different perspectives that our team members bring to the table. We said it above, and we'll say it again: We want to hear from you, even if you don't meet all of the requirements for a specific role.
We're also an equal opportunity employer and we do not discriminate on the basis of race; color; ancestry or national origin; religion; physical or mental disability; age; sex, including pregnancy; sexual orientation; gender, gender identity, or gender expression; medical condition; genetic information; or marital, military, or veteran status.
