Job Summary

The Furniture Associate will play a critical role in processing incoming donations and day-to-day operations of the Furniture and Misc Furniture Departments. This position will coordinate with the Furniture Team Leader daily to manage various aspects of the furniture department to include but not limited to overseeing cleanliness of area, sorting and pricing donations, furniture assembly, delivery services and other related duties as assigned. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational skills, pay strong attention to detail, be a team player and have a passion for fostering a positive work environment for employees and volunteers.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Donation Processing and Pricing: Evaluate, clean, perform small repairs, and price furniture and large appliances
  • Work with volunteers and staff to coordinate and physically load, unload and move furniture and large appliances
  • Assist driver for deliveries and pickups as scheduled by Furniture Team Leader and Booksavers Manager
  • Assist with retail displays and rotation
  • Attend regular meetings with, and as scheduled by, the Team Leader or Thrift Manager.
  • Be available for occasional weekend shifts as needed.
  • Provide friendly and knowledgeable customer service assistance as needed.
  • Work cooperatively with Team Members, Team Leader and Volunteers in Furniture as well as other departments and Management.
  • Must be able to plan (organize and schedule) own working activities after checking in with the supervisor.
  • Provide backup coverage for Team Leaders on their days off

Work Environment

The Furniture Associate is expected to report to the Furniture Team Leader or the Thrift Manager in the absence of the Furniture Team Leader. This position requires good communication skills in order to communicate effectively with donors, customers and co-workers verbally ,as well as, written.

Harrisonburg Gift & Thrift supports the local and global relief, development and peace projects of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC.ORG). We also support other local nonprofits in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham/Augusta area that serve at-risk populations in our communities. We also strive to be good environmental stewards, saving as much as possible from the landfill.


Other Duties and Requirements

The regular schedule of work days is Monday through Friday and occasional Saturdays with a schedule agreed upon at hire. Reliable and satisfactory attendance is an essential function of this position. The duties, responsibilities, and requirements listed above should not be interpreted as a comprehensive list. Requirements:
  • Familiarity with furniture, carpentry, use of hand and power tools. Ability to perform basic repairs and assemble/disassemble items.
  • Move up to 75 pounds. on a regular basis.
  • Use a pallet jack
  • Perform tasks with loading and unloading of box truck.
  • Assemble/disassemble objects, use hand and power tools, and perform basic repairs.
  • Be available to work at the times needed by the Furniture department
  • Be on feet the majority of the time
  • Proficient in English with good oral and written communication skills. Ability to use the telephone effectively.
  • General computer skills including email and internet use are recommended.
