What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Functional System Administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional System Administrator, you need a solid understanding of system administration, database management, and business process analysis, typically backed by a degree in IT or a related field. Familiarity with ERP systems (like SAP or Oracle), ticketing platforms, and relevant certifications such as ITIL or CompTIA are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and customer service skills help you bridge technical and user needs. These competencies are vital to ensure system reliability, efficient support, and alignment between technology and organizational objectives.

What are some typical challenges a Functional System Administrator may encounter when managing user permissions and system configurations?

Functional System Administrators often face challenges in balancing security with user accessibility, especially when managing permissions for diverse teams. They must ensure that users have the appropriate access to perform their tasks without exposing sensitive data or creating security risks. Additionally, keeping system configurations up to date while minimizing downtime requires strong planning and communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Staying informed about software updates and best practices also helps mitigate potential issues and ensures smooth system operations.

What are Functional System Administrators?

Functional System Administrators are IT professionals responsible for managing and supporting business applications and systems to ensure they operate efficiently and meet organizational needs. Unlike technical system administrators who focus primarily on hardware, software, and network infrastructure, functional system administrators bridge the gap between technical teams and business users. Their goal is to ensure that software applications function well for end users and align with business processes.

Job description

Security System Administrator
Location: Ashburn, VA
Summary
The Security Systems Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day administration, maintenance, and support of our
global physical security systems and the infrastructure that runs them. This role blends hands-on ownership of
CCTV/VMS, Access Control, and Key Management platforms with core systems administration across Windows Server,
virtualization, networking, and storage.
You will work closely with Security Engineering/Security DevOps, local technicians, and facility stakeholders to keep
systems reliable, secure, and consistently deployed across data centers and edge sites. This is an operations-focused
role with strong technical depth, clear ownership, and high impact.
Key Responsibilities
Administer and support physical security platforms including video management/CCTV (Genetec, Avigilon), access control
(Lenel, Genetec), and key management (Traka).
Maintain and operate the supporting server infrastructure including Windows Server, services, patching, backups,
hardening, and health monitoring.
Perform Tier 2 troubleshooting for incidents impacting security platforms and infrastructure, including log review, root
cause isolation, and coordination of remediation.
Partner with local site technicians on break-fix execution, validating outcomes and restoring service quickly and safely.
Perform basic-to-intermediate network troubleshooting supporting security systems, including VLAN/IP troubleshooting,
routing/firewall dependency identification, and packet-level checks when needed.
Support virtualization operations where security systems are hosted, including VMware/vSphere (and exposure to
VMware Cloud Foundation where applicable).
Support storage operations that enable video retention and system performance, including SMB/NFS fundamentals,
capacity monitoring, and performance troubleshooting (PowerScale/OneFS or Pure Storage experience is a plus).
Execute routine maintenance and lifecycle work such as upgrades, firmware/software updates, certificate renewals (where
applicable), configuration standardization, and vulnerability remediation.
Maintain accurate documentation and operational artifacts including runbooks, diagrams, inventories, and incident/change
records.
Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying recurring issues and proposing fixes through standardization,
automation, or monitoring enhancements.
Provide guidance and support to internal partners (Security, Facilities, DC Operations) on platform capabilities, limitations,
and operational best practices.
Required Skills & Qualifications
5+ years of experience in a Systems Administrator, Security Systems Administrator, or Infrastructure Operations role (data
center or critical environment experience preferred).
Strong experience administering Windows Server environments, including troubleshooting, patching, service
management, and operational hardening.
Hands-on experience supporting physical security systems such as VMS/CCTV, access control, and/or key management
platforms (Genetec, Avigilon, Lenel, Traka preferred).
Solid troubleshooting ability across systems and infrastructure layers, including logs, services, connectivity, and
performance bottlenecks.
Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (IP addressing, VLANs, DNS, routing basics, firewall dependencies, and
troubleshooting workflows).
Strong operational discipline with documentation, change control, and incident response practices.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in cross-functional environments.
Nice to Have
Virtualization experience with VMware vSphere; familiarity with VMware Cloud Foundation is a strong plus.
Storage platform familiarity, especially large-scale video retention and NAS concepts; Dell PowerScale/OneFS or Pure
Storage is a plus.
Scripting/automation experience (Ansible preferred; Python/Powershell also valuable) for operational tasks and
repeatability.
Familiarity with monitoring/alerting practices (health checks, metrics, dashboards, log-based troubleshooting).
Certifications such as Microsoft/VMware, Security+, Network+, or ITIL (helpful but not required).
