Functional Project Manager information

What is a functional project manager?

Functional Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects within a specific business function, such as IT, finance, or human resources. They are responsible for planning, executing, and finalizing projects according to deadlines and within budget, while ensuring that the project aligns with the goals of their functional area. Unlike general project managers, they often have specialized knowledge in the area they manage, allowing them to coordinate effectively with both project teams and department stakeholders. Their role typically includes resource allocation, risk management, and communication between technical and non-technical teams.

How does a functional project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

A Functional Project Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between different departments, such as IT, operations, and business units, throughout a project. They facilitate communication, align goals, and ensure that all stakeholders are informed about project progress and changes. Collaboration often involves leading regular meetings, managing expectations, and resolving conflicts to keep the project on track. This role requires balancing technical requirements with business objectives, making strong interpersonal and organizational skills essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, business process knowledge, and usually a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Jira), workflow tools, and enterprise systems (such as SAP or Oracle) is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualities ensure that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with business objectives.

What is the difference between Functional Project Manager vs Business Analyst?

Job description

Job Description:

The Master Project Manager owns the cross-functional project portfolio — enabling visibility, driving accountability and ensuring that strategic priorities move from decision to delivery without friction.

You won't manage a team of project managers. You are the standard. This role requires someone who can hold complexity, run multiple workstreams simultaneously, communicate with clarity, and build systems that outlast any single initiative.

 Job Title: Master Project Manager

Supervisor’s Title: Chief of Staff

Department: Executive

Location: Richmond, VA (Hybrid)

About TemperPack

TemperPack is a rapidly growing company based in Richmond, Virginia and with locations in Las Vegas Nevada, and Holt Michigan. We design and manufacture innovative, sustainable packaging components for cold-chain shipping of food and pharmaceutical products.  The markets we serve have an urgent need for disruptive, sustainable alternatives to replace the wide array of non-sustainable packaging materials conventionally used in the cold-chain such as Styrofoam coolers.  Our aspiration is to provide packaging solutions that customers and end-consumers feel great about using.

Essential Job Functions:

Strategic Portfolio Management

  • Manage the full cross-functional project portfolio
  • Maintain a real-time view of project health, milestones, blockers, and risks
  • Build and maintain the master project tracker — structured, searchable, and always current
  • Create executive-ready status reporting for project portfolio

Operating Cadence

  • Own project update meetings and steering committee meetings
  • Partner with the CoS to translate strategic decisions into actionable workplans with clear owners and timelines
  • Run post-mortem and lessons-learned cadences on completed strategic initiatives

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Interface directly with project managers from each function and the leadership team to track dependencies and clear blockers
  • Flag risks and conflicts proactively — never reactively
  • Prepare briefing materials, project summaries, and executive updates

Systems & Tools

  • Own and continuously improve the project management framework
  • Drive adoption of project management tools
  • Build reporting templates, RACI frameworks, and project intake processes

Education and Experience:

  • 7+ years of project or program management experience in a fast-paced, complex environment
  • Proven ability to manage multiple high-stakes workstreams simultaneously without dropping the ball
  • Mastery of Monday.com, Jira and/or similar enterprise project management tools
  • Experience in a strategy, or Operations function is a strong plus
  • PMP, PgMP, or equivalent certification preferred but not required
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication — you make the complex feel simple
  • A bias for clarity, action, and accountability — in yourself and others

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift up to 15 pounds unassisted
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer
