What is a functional architect?

A Functional Architect is a professional who designs and defines the functional aspects of systems, ensuring that business requirements are accurately translated into technical solutions. They work closely with stakeholders to gather requirements, create functional specifications, and oversee the implementation of solutions that align with business needs. Functional Architects bridge the gap between business users and technical teams, ensuring that the final product supports organizational objectives. Their expertise is essential in large-scale IT projects, enterprise system integrations, and process optimizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Architect, you need expertise in business process modeling, requirements analysis, and IT systems design, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as BPMN, UML, ERP platforms, and certifications like TOGAF or Salesforce Architect are commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and stakeholder management skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure alignment between business needs and technical solutions, driving successful project outcomes and organizational efficiency.

How does a functional architect typically collaborate with stakeholders throughout a project lifecycle?

A Functional Architect works closely with both business and technical stakeholders to translate business requirements into functional solutions. Throughout a project, they facilitate workshops, gather and document requirements, and ensure that the proposed architecture aligns with organizational goals. They often act as a bridge between end-users, project managers, developers, and QA teams, ensuring clear communication and alignment at each project phase. Effective collaboration and stakeholder management are crucial for delivering solutions that meet both business and technical needs.

What is a functional architect?

A functional architect designs application systems to streamline business processes and meet the needs of a business. Working from project to project, a functional architect must define the purpose and scope of the technical aspects of an application system or product. Daily duties include collaborating with other managers within the business to establish product design, development, and sales projections. A functional architect must understand the high-level functionality of an application or product from both a technical and conceptual viewpoint. Qualifications include years of relevant experience and well-developed skills in business, system analysis, and product management.

You will serve as both architect and builder partnering with IT leaders, developers, data and AI teams, and business stakeholders to move ideas from concept to governed production while scaling citizen development and reusable AI application patterns.

Roles and Responsibilities

Define and evolve enterprise architecture patterns, technical standards, and delivery guardrails aligned with CoorsTek's business priorities, AI strategy, application modernization needs, and citizen development approach.

  • Act as a hands-on architect and builder by designing, prototyping, reviewing, and, where needed, developing solutions across front-end, service-tier, API, integration, and AI-enabled application layers.

  • Partner with business leaders, IT teams, and solution builders to translate business needs into practical solution, application, data, and integration architectures.

  • Provide hands-on guidance to teams building with approved AI-assisted development tools and platforms, including Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Codex, Claude, Claude Code, Replit, Azure-hosted applications, and other approved enterprise tools.

  • Define and reinforce software development lifecycle, including Git-based workflows, branching strategy, pull requests, code review, testing, release management, and production readiness.

  • Review solution designs and code to improve quality, maintainability, security, resiliency, and alignment to enterprise architecture standards.

  • Help teams move solutions from prototype to governed production by establishing patterns for hosting, secrets management, logging, monitoring, support ownership, and lifecycle management.

  • Support the development of internal applications, integrations, APIs, and AI-enabled solutions that interact with enterprise and plant systems through approved methods and patterns.

  • Coach developers, engineers, analysts, and citizen developers on architecture principles, AI application patterns, coding standards, and production readiness.

  • Develop reusable templates, sample applications, reference implementations, and playbooks that accelerate delivery and improve consistency across teams.

  • Partner with cybersecurity, infrastructure, enterprise applications, and data teams to ensure architectures incorporate identity, access control, observability, supportability, and responsible AI usage.

  • Anticipate emerging trends in AI tools, coding assistants, cloud application patterns, and software engineering practices, and translate those capabilities into practical recommendations for CoorsTek.

Job RequirementsEducation & Certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related field required

  • Master's degree preferred

  • Relevant Microsoft, Azure, architecture, cloud, software engineering, AI, or Databricks certifications preferred.

Experience:

  • 10 or more years of progressive work experience in enterprise architecture, software engineering, application development, integration, AI-enabled solutions, or a related field.

  • Strong hands-on software development experience using Python and TypeScript, including front-end, service-tier, API, and integration work.

  • Experience establishing or operating within disciplined software development lifecycle practices, including Git, branching strategies, pull requests, peer review, testing, release management, and support handoff.

  • Experience designing solution, application, integration, or enterprise architecture in complex, international business environments.

  • Experience helping teams build or govern internal applications, lightweight business apps, or AI-enabled solutions in enterprise environments.

  • Experience supporting manufacturing, industrial, plant, engineering, or multi-site global environments preferred.

  • Experience with Azure-hosted application patterns, modern CI/CD, AI-assisted development tools, Databricks, or governed data and AI platforms preferred.
