The Waste Management Specialist is responsible for executing radioactive and hazardous waste management activities in compliance with DOE, EPA, DOT, RCRA, and site-specific requirements. This role ensures proper characterization, packaging, documentation, and shipment of waste generated from manufacturing and laboratory operations.
This is a hands-on role working in controlled and radiological environments. In addition to waste management responsibilities, this position provides field support and job coverage for radiological work activities, supporting contamination control, monitoring, and safe execution of work in radiological areas.
The role is critical to maintaining regulatory compliance, safe waste handling practices, and operational support across Standard Nuclear's facilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Waste Management & Regulatory Compliance
  • Perform waste characterization activities, including coordination of sampling, development of waste profiles, and verification of Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) compliance
  • Package, label, and prepare radioactive and hazardous waste in accordance with DOE Orders, RCRA, TSCA, DOT regulations, and site procedures
  • Ensure proper waste segregation, container selection, labeling, contamination control, and storage practices
  • Prepare, review, and maintain required documentation including waste profiles, manifests, shipping papers, and supporting records
  • Coordinate and support shipment of waste to approved disposal facilities, ensuring proper classification and regulatory compliance
  • Maintain inspection-ready records and support internal and external audits, assessments, and regulatory inspections
  • Identify and report waste-related issues, non-conformances, and regulatory concerns and support corrective actions

Radiological Job Coverage & Field Support
  • Provide job coverage for work performed in radiological areas, supporting safe execution of activities
  • Support contamination control practices, personnel monitoring, and area monitoring as required
  • Assist with implementation of radiological work permits (RWPs) and site-specific safety controls
  • Monitor work activities to ensure compliance with radiological and safety procedures
  • Identify and report abnormal radiological or safety conditions

Operational Support & Coordination
  • Interface with Radiological Controls, EH&S, Operations, and Engineering teams to support safe and compliant waste handling and field activities
  • Support planning and execution of work involving hazardous or radioactive materials
  • Assist with coordination of waste handling activities across production and laboratory operations

Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure all waste management and radiological support activities are conducted safely and in compliance with regulatory and site requirements
  • Adhere to Integrated Safety Management (ISM) principles and site safety programs
  • Maintain proper use of PPE and contamination control practices

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience managing radioactive and/or hazardous waste in accordance with RCRA, TSCA, DOE Order 435.1, and DOT regulations
  • Experience working in radiological or controlled environments
  • Radiological Worker training (RW I or RW II) or ability to obtain
  • Experience supporting radiological work activities or job coverage (RCT support experience preferred)
  • Familiarity with waste characterization, packaging, and shipping documentation
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records in a regulated environment
  • Ability to work in field environments and support hands-on operational activities
  • Experience in nuclear, energy, or other regulated industries preferred
