Position Announcement
Join Utah Valley University and play an important role in creating a clean, safe, and welcoming environment that supports learning, teaching, and campus life. As a Custodian, you will perform a variety of custodial duties, including floor care, carpet cleaning, dusting, restroom maintenance, and general facility upkeep. Your work will have a direct impact on the daily experience of students, employees, and visitors while helping to maintain the high standards of one of Utah's largest and fastest-growing universities.
UVU values dependable team members who take pride in quality work and customer service. In this role, you will receive training in the safe handling and disposal of cleaning products and hazardous materials, as well as proper procedures for blood and bodily fluid cleanup. Regular rotation between work areas provides variety and the opportunity to work across different campus environments. This position follows an evening schedule of Monday through Thursday, 4:30 p.m. to 1:15 a.m., and Friday, 3:30 p.m. to midnight, offering daytime flexibility while contributing to a campus community where people can learn, work, and succeed.
Summary of Responsibilities
  • Responsible for securing doors and windows of all areas and all buildings. Assists in emergency procedures and assists in recycling and pest control.
  • Helps the campus and facilities maintain a good public image by providing a safe, clean, comfortable environment conducive to learning for students, visitors, and employees.
  • Maintains all types of floor surfaces, fabric surfaces, and upholstery.
  • Maintains and cleans restrooms, including porcelain and stainless steel surfaces, walls, floor drains, floors, etc.
  • Maintains offices, classrooms, labs, conference rooms, dining room, food preparation and serving areas, and ballroom.
  • Maintains halls, stairs, elevators, entryways, and lobbies. Maintains inventory and cleans custodial closets and storage areas.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
High school diploma from a standard high school or the equivalent and any combination of post-high school education and/or directly related full-time experience to the Summary of Duties totaling six months is required.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Knowledge of proper use and disposal of hazardous chemicals and products.
  • Knowledge of body fluid cleanup and proper protection.
  • Knowledge of proper radio communications.
  • Knowledge of pest control.
  • Knowledge of all floor types, such as terrazzo, cement, wood, vinyl, and ceramic tile as well as carpet fibers, weaves, and backings.
  • Knowledge of waxes/polishes, acids, other chemicals, buffers, extractors, vacuums, and scrubbers.
  • Knowledge of current cleaning techniques and proper cleaning chemicals.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to withstand strenuous and adverse working conditions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform skilled custodial duties, equipment maintenance, and minor plumbing.
