As a CEMS Technician at the Sweeny Refinery, you will play a key role in maintaining environmental analyzer systems and associated equipment to support safe, reliable, and compliant operations.
This position requires the successful completion of an online assessment. The assessment must be completed within 7 days of your application date OR prior to the job posting expiration date (August 5, 2026), whichever is earlier. Your assessment results will be valid for one year.
What You'll Do
  • Perform calibrations, programming, and repairs on environmental analyzers and associated equipment.
  • Perform daily rounds on shelters and CEMS systems, including changing calibration and carrier gas cylinders.
  • Maintain CEMS analyzers with greater than 95% availability each quarter.
  • Communicate with operations and environmental personnel regarding CEMS-related questions and issues.
  • Maintain up-to-date maintenance logs on each CEMS system.
  • Complete 7-day drift tests, CGAs, and other environmentally regulated preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain and order spare parts and calibration gas inventory.
  • Modify existing and create new preventive maintenance tasks for analyzers.
  • Work with the Analytical Engineer to improve or upgrade analytical equipment for better reliability and performance.
  • Serve as a technical SME to assist analyzer technicians as needed.

What You'll Bring - Required
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
  • Possess a valid in-state driver's license.
  • Associate's degree in Instrument Technology, Analytical Technology, or a related degree.
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:

    • Work at various heights up to 200 feet.
    • Listen and follow instructions.
    • Communicate orally and in writing with team members, leaders, and operations/environmental personnel.
    • Use a variety of safety and personal protective equipment.
  • Work overtime and/or respond to callouts based on operational performance and business need.

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred
  • Strong work ethic.
  • 5 or more years of analytical or analyzer experience.
  • Refinery experience in instrumentation or analytical work.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and SAP.
  • Experience calibrating and troubleshooting gas chromatographs, including Maxum, Emerson, or Yokogawa GC8000.
  • Experience designing and troubleshooting sample conditioning systems.
  • Experience with CEMS and opacity monitoring.
  • Experience with basic networking and Modbus communication.

Compensation Range
This position has a base salary range of $110,700 - $135,300.

The Sweeny Refinery is located in Old Ocean, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, and aromatics units, as well as access to the on-site vacuum tower and delayed coking unit, which is an asset owned by Phillips 66 Partners. Sweeny processes heavy, high-sulfur crude oil and some light, low sulfur crude oil. Domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil is transported by truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, heating oil and petroleum coke. The refinery receives crude oil by pipeline and via tankers, through terminals on the Gulf Coast, including a deepwater terminal at Freeport. Refined products are distributed throughout the Midcontinent region, southeastern and eastern United States by pipeline, barge and rail car. Refined products are also exported to Latin America by waterborne cargo.
