A Sustaining/Mechanical Engineer working with Lighting Services Inc will develop and design the mechanical aspects of lighting fixtures, transitioning them from prototype to production. This role involves creating and revising designs, performing simulations, specifying and integrating components like LEDs and optics and developing methods of manufacture/bill of materials. He/she will also work with our manufacturing teams to ensure smooth production.
Responsibilities -
Design and Development:
Creating and refining mechanical designs for lighting products using CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and utilizing Enterprise Resource Planning software to develop methods of manufacture / bill of materials.
Component Integration:
Specifying and integrating components like LEDs and optics into the overall fixture design.
Simulation and Analysis:
Performing simulations to optimize the structural integrity and performance of the lighting products.
Testing and Validation:
Developing and executing test plans to ensure the mechanical, optical, and electrical components meet specifications and quality standards.
Manufacturing Support:
Collaborating with manufacturing teams to ensure a smooth transition from design to production, including creating drawings, documentation, and addressing any production issues.
Product Optimization:
Working to improve product design, performance, and manufacturability throughout the product lifecycle.
Essential Skills and Qualifications -
Mechanical Engineering Fundamentals:
A solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including design, materials, and manufacturing processes.
Lighting Knowledge:
Familiarity with lighting principles, including thermal management, optics, and relevant standards (like UL1598 and UL8750).
Problem-Solving:
Ability to identify and solve technical challenges related to product design and manufacturing.
Communication and Collaboration:
Effective communication skills to collaborate with other engineers, manufacturing teams, and potentially with sourcing and sales.
Product Development Experience:
Experience in the product development process, from concept to production, is often preferred.
Hands-on Experience:
Experience with prototyping, testing, and working with manufacturing processes.
Regulatory Compliance:
Familiarity with regulatory requirements and validation testing methods.
Skills Required -
• Strong knowledge of track lighting and specification grade products.
• Excellent communication skills and confidence presenting technical information.
• Ability to create clear, accurate technical content and documentation.
• Strong experience with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks is preferred) as well as AutoCad for drafting
• Highly organized, detail oriented, and comfortable working across teams.
Education and Experience -
• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related technical experience.
• 3-5 years of experience in lighting, engineering, or a related technical field.
• High-energy individual with a positive attitude and team-oriented approach to work.
Physical Requirements -
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
