Job description

NFI Massachusetts, Inc. is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher - High School Science to provide academic instruction and individualized educational services to students within a Department of Mental Health funded Intensive Residential Treatment Program (IRTP). This position supports students with complex emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs within a structured therapeutic environment while ensuring compliance with DESE and IDEA regulations.
The ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge of the Massachusetts Science Curriculum Frameworks and demonstrate the ability to provide differentiated instruction within a therapeutic and highly supportive educational setting.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized and small group science instruction aligned with Massachusetts Science Curriculum Frameworks
  • Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals, accommodations, and modifications
  • Modify curriculum and instructional strategies to support diverse learning profiles
  • Utilize trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and evidence-based instructional practices
  • Integrate social-emotional learning and executive functioning supports into instruction
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment
  • Support students during periods of emotional and behavioral dysregulation using therapeutic and crisis-management strategies
  • Participate in crisis prevention and intervention training and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support student stabilization
  • Participate in IEP meetings, treatment planning, and multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Maintain accurate student records, progress reports, and required DESE documentation
  • Collaborate with families, school districts, clinical providers, and residential staff to support student success

Qualifications
  • Massachusetts DESE Special Education Teacher License - Moderate Disabilities (5-12) required
  • Massachusetts DESE Licensure in High School Science required
  • Strong knowledge of Massachusetts Science Curriculum Frameworks
  • Experience working with students with emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges preferred
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
  • Commitment to trauma-informed and therapeutic educational practices

Position Details
  • Salary Range: $60,000-$75,000
  • Full-time, based on a 190-day school-year position with optional ESY opportunities
  • Small class sizes with multidisciplinary team support
  • Specialized school setting within a secure DMH IRTP program
  • Reports directly to the Special Education Coordinator
