Position Description
Reports To: Director of Field Safety
Position Summary
The Charleston (Coastal Region) Area Safety Manager will prioritize our employees' safety, health, and welfare. Faulconer believes in LEADING safety, not MANAGING safety. Working in a team environment, the Area Safety Manager will influence safe behaviors through relationship-building and coaching other employees. Maintains Faulconer's Core Values at all times.
This position will report to the Director of Field Safety, with additional guidance and support from the VP, Health & Safety.
The qualified individual will work closely with the SWVA Area Manager and Construction Manager to create and maintain a safe and regulatory-compliant work culture.
Primary Job Responsibilities
  • Site safety inspections
  • Lead incident investigations.
  • On-site coaching and influencing safe working behaviors.
  • Safety training (including excavation, confined space, fall protection, material handling, ladder use, concrete, heavy equipment & road work)
  • Assist Faulconer operations team in conducting effective daily risk assessments.
  • Attend any safety meetings that are required by Faulconer Construction and the general contractor.
  • Responsible for purchasing and maintaining PPE and other safety-related equipment.
  • Review plans and drawings to prepare plans and assist in planning activities, including site specific plans for trenching and confined space.
  • Develop AHA's (Activity hazard analysis) and risk assessments for tasks associated with contracts.
  • Make site visits daily and perform site inspections (1 per project per week)
  • Develop toolbox talks that are specific to our latest trends and industry trends.
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis and develop lessons learned to distribute to field employees.
  • Complete and communicate incident reports, corrective actions, and lessons learned to operations teams.
  • Elevate site safety concerns to the Faulconer safety team.
  • Provide weekly updates during the Safety Teams Weekly Safety Meeting.

Position Expectations
The qualified candidate should reside in the greater Charleston areas.
This position is required to provide full-time safety oversight to all Charleston area projects. The qualified candidate should possess the necessary soft skills to build solid working relationships with all employees and subcontractors on site, and the ability to influence safe working behaviors in a manner that is respected by the workers and site leadership. The right candidate should also have the ability to influence near miss and incident reporting. In addition, the right candidate should have the ability to stop jobs when warranted and be able to engage in difficult but professional discussions with operations leadership. This position will require working outside and commuting in a company truck approximately 75% of the time. This includes working in extreme cold and heat. Candidates should be able to lift approximately 40 lbs. Though rare, travel to the other Faulconer areas and overnight stays may be required to support other safety team members, as well as attend company meetings.
Position Requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-5 years as a site safety manager for multiple employer construction sites
  • Multiple Trade Experience (Concrete, Cranes, Heavy Civil, Clearing, Grading, Rigging, Landscaping, etc.)
  • Heavy Civil Construction preferred experience.
  • Knowledge of excavation benching and sloping requirements.
  • Knowledge of soil types and requirements related to excavation.
  • OSHA 500 Certification is preferred but not required.
  • CPR/FA Instructor Certification is preferred but not required.
  • Valid driver's license with a favorable driving record
  • Ability to pass a drug screen
  • Ability to pass a federal, state, and local background check
  • Knowledge of EM 385-1-1

Work Authorization / Security Clearance
  • Employee must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Drug screens are required after an offer is accepted, and continued employment is based on the initial drug screen and any future/random drug screens administered.
  • A background check will be required.
  • A confidentiality agreement may be required.
  • Driving records (MVR) review will be required.
  • Further clearance may be required by clients (i.e. government or military site access).
