Job description

Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect with friends in 3D immersive digital experiences- all created by our global community of developers and creators.
At Roblox, we're building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience that they can imagine to life. Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together, from anywhere in the world, and on any device. We're on a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and looking for amazing talent to help us get there.
A career at Roblox means you'll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone.
About the role:
Roblox Studio is the creation engine behind millions of immersive 3D games built by creators around the world. We are entering a major platform transition, evolving Studio into an AI-Native IDE where intelligent systems plan, act, validate, and iterate alongside creators to amplify their output. We are seeking a Technical Director, Applied AI to own the technical direction of the agentic AI systems embedded deeply into Roblox Studio. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role operating at the intersection of platform engineering, AI systems, and developer experience, where you will set the technical direction, design the architecture, and write the code.
You will:
  • Design and build the agentic AI systems at the core of the AI-Native IDE (planning, execution, validation, evaluation) so they are production-grade and reliable.
  • Decide how Studio uses coding models, agents, retrieval, tool calling, and context management across the Assistant and the broader creator workflow.
  • Own the quality bar and evaluation strategy, standing up quantitative and qualitative eval pipelines, including human-in-the-loop, so we ship with confidence.
  • Optimize these systems for latency, throughput, and cost (caching, routing, distillation, quantization).
  • Bring reusable patterns and best practices to teams across Studio, raising the applied-AI fluency of Studio engineering.

You have:
  • 12+ years of engineering experience, including ownership of large-scale, long-lived platforms.
  • Deep, hands-on experience building LLM-powered and agentic systems in production, beyond chat-based interfaces.
  • Strong systems and software engineering skills, with the ability to design the architecture and write the code.
  • A track record of defining evaluation frameworks for AI product quality, combining automated metrics with human review, and optimizing inference for latency, throughput, and cost.
  • Strong background in developer tools or IDE-like platforms, with a proven ability to set technical direction and raise quality across multiple teams as an individual contributor.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Background in coding models or code-generation systems, and/or research experience in reinforcement learning (RLHF, RLAIF, preference modeling) or related model-training techniques.

You are:
  • An innovative technical leader who wants to build the AI systems that power the creativity of millions.
  • Product-minded, with a real understanding of developer needs, creator workflows, and how AI systems land in the user experience.
  • Adaptable and curious, with good judgment about when to build, when to reuse, and when to push a need back to a model team.
  • Able to operate at the deepest technical levels and still communicate direction clearly to partners.
