Job Description

Correctional Officers supervise inmates in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulations, and special verbal instruction. They observe the conduct and behavior of inmates, maintain discipline, enforce rules, conduct frequent counts, provide non-professional counseling to inmates, and are responsible for the prevention of disturbances and escapes during an assigned shift.
Currently recruiting for applicants to work 3pm - 11pm or 11pm - 7am shifts. Employees who work either of these shifts get a $1.00/hour shift differential.

Future Pay Increases: July 2025, January 2026, and July 2026

This position is deemed a safety sensitive position, and the selected hire is subject to the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.

Current Cumberland County Employees will follow the County Promotion/Demotion policy.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains 100% accountability of all keys, equipment, and supplies necessary in the operation of an assigned duty post
  • Maintains 100% accountability of all inmates under their supervision by overseeing inmate conduct and behavior, performing inmate counts, enforcing rules in a fair and impartial manner, maintaining discipline, and preventing escape through the use of procedural and physical safeguards
  • Maintains logbooks, various forms, and internal records of inmates and prepares reports in accordance with established policy and procedure
  • Performs clothed and unclothed searches of inmates and conducts cell and area searches in accordance with established policies
  • Receives, inventories, logs, and safely secures/stores monies and personal property belonging to inmates
  • Assists with prisoner transports if qualified as a “Transport Officer”
  • May serve as member of Fire Emergency Response Team (FERT)
  • May serve as Field Training Officer (FTO) assisting with staff training
  • Supervises inmate work details of a varied nature both inside and outside of the institution
  • Issues bedding, clothing, and house-keeping supplies to inmates as required
  • Assists with the meal distribution and feeding of inmates as required
  • Supervises inmate visits
  • Monitors CCTV and an electronically controlled security system
  • Controls access and egress into and out of restricted areas
  • Conducts various inventories on frequent basis
  • Attends mandatory trainings, meetings, and classes as directed
  • Performs other assignments as directed by the Warden or his designee

Qualifications

  1. Experience in corrections, law enforcement, or other criminal justice field preferred; additional education in a related field may be substituted for work experience.
  2. Applicant must be 21 years of age and have a high school diploma
  3. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License and a willingness to travel as needed
  4. Must attend and successfully complete the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Basic Training Academy within their first 12-months of employment
  5. Must be able to maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness to handle physical contacts and involvements with dangerous or potentially dangerous prisoners
  6. Must be able to cope with the physical and mental stresses of position
  7. Must maintain integrity and the ability to preserve the confidentiality of privileged information regarding prisoners, records, and departmental information
  8. Must have the ability to establish and maintain a professional, ethical, and effective working relationship with judicial staff, police, and other agents or employees within the criminal justice system
  9. Must possess the ability and confidence to make independent decisions when circumstances so warrant
  10. Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills
  11. Must be able to prepare reports and maintain forms and inventories
  12. Will be subject to the inherent dangers present when working with inmates / defendants
  13. Position may include potential exposure to blood borne pathogens and/or communicable diseases
  14. Must be able to report to work in all types of weather and conditions
