Full Time Postdoctoral Food Science information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time postdoctoral food scientist?

To thrive as a Full Time Postdoctoral Food Scientist, you need a PhD in food science or a related discipline, strong research skills, and expertise in experimental design and data analysis. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, statistical software (such as SPSS or R), and regulatory compliance systems is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration skills help you effectively share findings and work in multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are essential for conducting high-quality research, advancing knowledge in the field, and ensuring food safety and innovation.

What is a full time postdoctoral food science position?

Full Time Postdoctoral Food Science positions are research-focused roles undertaken by individuals who have recently earned their Ph.D. in food science or a related field. These positions typically last for one to three years and provide an opportunity to gain advanced research experience, contribute to scientific projects, and publish scholarly articles. Postdoctoral researchers in food science may work in academic, government, or industry laboratories, collaborating on studies related to food safety, quality, processing, or nutrition. The role is often a stepping stone to faculty positions or advanced industry roles.

What is the difference between Full Time Postdoctoral Food Science vs Full Time Research Scientist Food Science?

AspectFull Time Postdoctoral Food ScienceFull Time Research Scientist Food Science

Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutionsIndustry labs, corporate R&D departments
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, government agencies, research institutesFood companies, manufacturing firms, R&D divisions
Job FocusConducting research, publishing papers, gaining experienceProduct development, process improvement, applied research

Full Time Postdoctoral Food Science roles are primarily research-focused positions for recent Ph.D. graduates aiming to build expertise and publish findings. In contrast, Full Time Research Scientist Food Science positions are industry roles focused on applying research to develop products and improve processes. Both roles require strong food science credentials but differ in work environment and career objectives.

What are the typical research and collaboration expectations for a full time postdoctoral food science position?

In a full-time postdoctoral food science role, you will be expected to lead independent research projects while collaborating closely with senior scientists, graduate students, and sometimes industry partners. The position often involves designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, and publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals. Collaboration is key, as you may participate in multidisciplinary teams and contribute to grant writing or outreach activities. Balancing research independence with teamwork is a common challenge, but it also offers opportunities for professional growth and networking within academia and industry.

Job description

Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI) is the largest blood-focused research institute in the United States. With over 30 basic, translational, and clinical investigators, the institute is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and developing innovative therapies related to blood and blood disorders. The institute's research interests encompass a wide range of topics, including transfusion medicine, cellular therapy, thrombosis/hemostasis, immunology, and hematologic malignancies. As a vital part of Versiti, a non-profit organization with a blood bank at its core, the VBRI strives to improve lives through innovative research and the development of novel diagnostics and treatments.

VBRI is part of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Campus, a rapidly growing clinical-translational research hub. VBRI’s proximity to the Medical College of Wisconsin, Childrens’ Hospital of Wisconsin, and Froedtert Hospital facilitates seamless interdisciplinary collaborations. A range of exemplary core facilities support highly competitive research. In the summer of 2024, construction of a new research building began, doubling existing VBRI research space to enable the recruitment of 10-15 new faculty. With its renowned researchers, strategic expansion plans and location in a highly collaborative environment, the VBRI is poised to maintain and expand its position as one of the leading hematology institutes in the world.

Under the direction of a Principal Investigator, further develops and expands understanding of scientific theory in his/her area of interest. Incumbent also learns and applies scientific laboratory techniques and gains experience in other areas of research that will lead to increased probability of success as an independent scientist. This is a training position with an expected duration of 1 – 3 years.

The Jarjour laboratory at Versiti Blood Research Institute is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow. This position will be supported by a pending major award and has an expected duration of 2-4 years, dependent on workload and individual performance. Our group focuses on tissue-resident immunity, which supports organ homeostasis and acts as a first line of defense against pathogens, tumors, and other dangers. Remarkably, resident leukocytes are locally maintained independent of the circulating immune system, allowing them to become uniquely adapted to their home tissue and positioning them as key players in organ homeostasis. We seek to understand how resident immunity is maintained and how it evolves throughout life to enable new therapeutic interventions in human disease. Our lab is collaborative and founded on respect, empowering every person to achieve their goals and to embrace curiosity as we explore the immune system.

The successful candidate will lead projects unraveling the mechanisms supporting self-renewal of tissue-resident memory CD8 T cells. They will be expected to develop projects and take intellectual ownership, while working closely with Dr. Jarjour. They will also act as a mentor to junior members of the laboratory. The successful candidate will receive mentoring and training to support their career development and prepare them for independence. They will be encouraged to write fellowship and transition award applications with support from Dr. Jarjour.
