To thrive as a Full Time Patent Drafter, you need a strong background in engineering or science, detailed knowledge of patent law, and excellent technical writing skills, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with patent drafting software, legal databases, and the patent filing systems used by agencies like the USPTO or EPO is essential. Precision, analytical thinking, and strong communication are standout soft skills for interpreting complex inventions and collaborating with inventors and attorneys. These abilities ensure well-crafted, compliant patent applications that effectively protect intellectual property and withstand legal scrutiny.

What is full time patent drafting?

Full time patent drafting refers to the professional role of preparing and writing detailed patent applications on a full-time basis, usually for inventors, companies, or law firms. Patent drafters analyze inventions and translate them into legal documents that meet the requirements of patent offices. This job involves understanding technical details, conducting prior art searches, and ensuring the application clearly defines the novelty and scope of the invention. The role often requires collaboration with inventors, patent attorneys, and examiners to secure strong intellectual property protection.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in full time patent drafting roles, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in full time patent drafting often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex technical information from inventors, meeting tight deadlines for patent submissions, and ensuring compliance with evolving patent laws and regulations. Effective communication with inventors and R&D teams is crucial for accurately capturing the invention's novelty. Staying organized, regularly updating knowledge of patent office requirements, and using specialized drafting software can help manage these challenges and maintain high-quality submissions.

  • Purpose: Lead end-to-end prosecution for high-volume AI and software patent filings within an AI-accelerated in-house patent operation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES -
  • Review, redline, prosecute, sign, and file AI/software patent applications generated through the Patent Engine workflow.

  • Respond to office actions involving §101, §102/§103, and §112 issues.
  • Conduct examiner interviews when strategically beneficial.
  • Operate as the primary human reviewer for AI-drafted applications, identifying weaknesses, inconsistencies, and prosecution risks.
  • Collaborate directly with software and AI inventor teams to transform technical disclosures into prosecutable claims.
  • Feed prosecution learnings and redline patterns back into the Patent Engine for recursive drafting improvement.
  • Maintain rapid turnaround expectations for standard and priority filings.

MUST-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS -
  • Active USPTO Patent Bar registration in good standing.
  • Minimum 4 years of patent prosecution experience post-registration.
  • Minimum 50 patent applications drafted, prosecuted, or substantively responded to in software, AI/ML, or computer-architecture domains.

  • Experience in high-volume patent-agent tracks at leading intellectual property firms.
  • Hands-on experience using generative AI drafting tools in production prosecution workflows.
  • Familiarity with AI systems, multi-agent architectures, knowledge graphs, or software platform technologies.

WHAT WE OFFER -
  • Opportunity to help build a next-generation AI-powered patent operation.
  • High-autonomy environment with direct ownership over prosecution work.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge AI and software inventions.

  • Collaborative inventor engagement with AI and software engineering teams.

Honest Challenge.
This role is built for high-output patent professionals who thrive under ownership, speed, and independent accountability.
