Gallery Security Specialist -- UnarmedFirst & Second Shift | Full-Time & Part-Time OpportunitiesProtect. Welcome. Inspire.

The International African American Museum (IAAM) is seeking professional, service-minded Gallery Security Specialists to join our team. Available positions include first-shift and second-shift opportunities, with both full-time and part-time schedules available.

As a Gallery Security Specialist, you’ll play an essential role in protecting our galleries, treasured artwork, visitors, staff, and historic site while helping create a welcoming, safe, and dignified experience for every guest.

This is more than a security position. You’ll be part of a team that helps preserve and protect a space dedicated to honoring the untold stories of the African American journey and empowering people through knowledge of the past.

What We Offer

Starting Pay: $17.00 per hour
Plus FREE Parking; a savings of more than $6,000 per year!

Paid Time Off

Part-Time Employees
Employees working at least 20 hours per week receive up to 40 hours of vacation time each year.

Full-Time Employees
Employees working at least 30 hours per week receive:

  • Up to 80 hours of vacation time annually, with progressive increases up to 96 hours
  • Up to 96 hours of paid sick time
  • 10 paid holidays

What You'll Do

As a Gallery Security Specialist, you will help ensure that IAAM remains a safe, welcoming, and accessible environment for everyone.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Protect our galleries and collections by monitoring assigned posts throughout galleries, lobbies, entrances, exterior grounds, maritime-adjacent areas, and parking facilities.
  • Welcome and assist visitors with a friendly, professional presence and provide directions and information as needed.
  • Maintain a safe visitor experience by monitoring traffic and supporting orderly movement throughout gallery spaces.
  • Respond to emergencies including medical incidents, disturbances, alarms, severe weather, fire, evacuations, and other emergency situations.
  • Support emergency preparedness and assist first responders when needed.
  • Observe and report suspicious activity, hazards, incidents, and policy violations.
  • Verify credentials for staff, contractors, vendors, and approved guests.
  • Assist with crowd management during high-attendance days, programs, and special events.
  • Support accessibility by assisting visitors who require ADA accommodations.
  • Help maintain an environment that reflects IAAM’s commitment to safety, hospitality, dignity, and respect.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Ability to work overtime when needed for full-time positions
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification upon hire
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to navigate stairs and conduct outdoor patrols
  • Ability to remain calm, effective, and professional under pressure
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A welcoming, respectful, and service-oriented approach to working with the public
