Job description

The Technical Writer will work closely with the Product Engineering, Technical Customer Support, and Testing departments for the writing, rewriting, and/or editing of technical documents such as installation instructions, technical procedures, policies, processes, and related publications to communicate clearly and effectively technical specifications and instructions to a wide range of audiences. Acquires subject knowledge by interviewing product subject matter experts, referring to technical specifications, interpreting drawings and design details, and compliance requirements.

The Technical Writer must have excellent research skills, be able to organize their ideas, and be able to translate technical terms into text that any reader can understand. The position requires strong technical writing skills, knowledge of structured authoring, crisp and clear business communication, flexibility, and dedication to delivering high-quality, useful, and usable content. A successful Technical Writer will be a self-motivated team player who takes initiative, easily grasps technical concepts, and deals effectively with subject matter experts.

Must understand that project management and time management to meet deadlines are crucial and have experience in meeting client demands.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Uses CAD based software to create and maintain technical product documentation such as; installation instructions, guidelines, specification sheets or similar documents. This documentation includes written and illustrative details to ensure clear and effective communication to the customer.
  2. Determine and apply appropriate levels of editorial treatment to project materials.
  3. Accept editorial input from management and peers and incorporate such edits.
  4. Complete writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  5. Works closely with Product Engineering, Technical Customer Support, and Testing to review the final document and submit it for the approval process according to the procedure.
  6. Maintain internal technical reference documentation, including data library, technical release notes, process and procedure guides, and system requirements.
  7. Manages multiple projects concurrently and meets all documentation deliverable deadlines.
  8. Attends project meeting reviews and provides information on progress as required.
  9. Report promptly any quality issues detected to the immediate supervisor, and complete proper documentation following the department reporting procedure.
  10. Help with or complete special projects at the discretion of the Supervisor.
  11. Maintains 5S practices in their work area according to company procedures.
  12. Must follow all applicable safety procedures.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Manager or Supervisor.

Education and/or Experience

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma is required. College degree preferred. Work experience in writing, editing, and proofreading of a minimum of two years.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment would be helpful. Familiarity with ASTM, IPEMA, and CPSC guidelines and standards as they relate to commercial playground equipment would be a plus.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position works in a standard office environment containing furniture and equipment needed to conduct common business activities. These items include desks, chairs, cubicle walls, phone systems and cords, fax machines, copiers, conference room tables, computer systems, and filing cabinets. May occasionally require exposure to the manufacturing areas.

  • Must have experience or familiarity with CAD programs (SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar)
  • Experience with CAD based technical writing programs such as SolidWorks Composer is desirable
  • Must have experience with basic Microsoft Office software (Excel, Outlook, Word, etc.)
