Job description

LRE (Leeward Renewable Energy) is forging an American energy future with integrity, innovation, and positive impact. Born in Texas in 2003, we own and operate over 30 utility-scale wind, solar, and energy storage projects in local communities across the United States, totaling 4 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity.
LRE continues to help meet increased U.S. energy demand through our robust pipeline of new projects every year. Domestic jobs and manufacturing are fundamental to our full-lifecycle approach to projects, along with a long-term ownership model and a company culture dedicated to our community partners and protecting the natural environment.
Job Summary:
The BOP Lead Technician (P4) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and compliant operations and initial troubleshooting of the balance of plant of various renewable energy facilities. This position oversees the proper operations of the substations, switchyards, collection systems, and transmission interconnection assets. This role serves as the technical lead for coordinating and supervising contractors for planned maintenances and unplanned outages.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead day-to-day site operations, maintenance activities, and contractor oversight for the balance of plant.
  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture and compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NESC, company policies, and utility requirements.
  • Perform and oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on HV/MV equipment, substations, switchgear, transformers, breakers, relays and other balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Execute and coordinate switching activities, LOTO procedures, outage planning, and restoration efforts.
  • Support troubleshooting through field testing, SCADA review, relay event analysis, inspections, and data collection.
  • Coordinate vendors and contractors performing specialized testing, maintenance, and construction activities.
  • Assist with annual budgets, forecasting, purchasing, inventory management, and cost control initiatives.
  • Manage work orders, inspections, maintenance records, switching logs, and reporting through Maximo or similar CMMS platforms.
  • Support regulatory compliance, environmental requirements, hazardous waste management, and NERC-related maintenance documentation.
  • Serve as the primary site leadership resource in the absence of the Plant Manager and provide mentoring and development for technicians.
  • Maintain positive relationships with landowners, utilities, customers, contractors, and community stakeholders.
  • Support construction, commissioning, retrofits, and major maintenance projects as required.

Qualifications:
Include the required and preferred qualifications separately, such as education, years of experience, certifications, and specific skills or knowledge.
Required:
  • Strong knowledge of balance-of-plant systems of BESS and Solar renewable plants.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in substations, including control rooms and energized MV and HV environments.
  • Strong communication, organizational, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to read and follow one-lines, schematics, protection drawings, electrical prints and switching procedures.
  • Practical experience performing HV/MV maintenance, switching support, and field-testing activities (13.8 kV and above).
  • Strong functional understanding of substations, transformers, breakers, relays, and HV equipment operation.
  • Experience working in control houses and supporting troubleshooting through SCADA data review and relay event reporting.
  • Experience using CMMS/work management systems (Maximo required).
  • Working knowledge of NERC-related maintenance and documentation requirements.
  • Strong understanding of NFPA 70E, OSHA, NESC, and high-voltage safety practices.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work in field-based environments.

Preferred:
  • Utility-qualified or QEW high-voltage switching authorization.
  • Experience supporting transmission or gen-tie infrastructure.
  • Electrical trade school, technical certification, or military electrical background.
  • Experience using CMMS systems such as Maximo.

Work Environment & Location:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb structures, and work outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to work around energized equipment under strict safety controls. Work during nights and occasional shifts as needed.
  • Participation in on-call rotations, emergency response, and overtime as required.
  • Willingness to travel between facilities as needed.

Applicants must have current authorization to work for any employer in the United States on a full-time basis without the need for an employment visa now or in the future. Employer visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
