Job description

INDUSTRY: Upstream Oil & Gas

LOCATION: Midland, TX (In-Office)

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-Time

CONTEXT: Our client, a small and growing upstream E&P operator, is seeking an Assistant Controller / JIB Accountant to join their team. This is a hands-on role for an accounting professional who can operate independently, take ownership of day-to-day accounting functions, and support the Controller in building a strong, reliable accounting operation.

This position will play a key role across Accounts Payable, JIB, and month-end close, with visibility into the full accounting cycle. Direct JIB experience is preferred but not requiredโ€”strong upstream AP experience with the ability to learn and grow into JIB responsibilities will be considered.

The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable rolling up their sleeves in a lean environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own and manage full-cycle Accounts Payable for upstream operations (high-volume processing, accuracy, and timeliness).
  • Review, code, and enter invoices tied to LOE, CAPEX, and field operations.
  • Code costs to appropriate properties, wells, and AFEs.
  • Support and/or lead Joint Interest Billing (JIB) processes, including partner billings.
  • Assist with revenue distribution and partner-related accounting as needed.
  • Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Land, and Engineering to ensure proper cost allocation.
  • Support month-end close, including accruals, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready financial records.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Serve as a key support to the Controller on ad hoc projects and accounting initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably within upstream oil & gas.
  • Strong background in Accounts Payable and cost coding (LOE, AFE, well-level tracking).
  • Exposure to or willingness to learn JIB accounting.
  • Solid understanding of month-end close processes.
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
  • Proven track record of tenure, reliability, and accountability.
  • Self-starter who can work independently in a small team environment.
  • Proficient in Excel and accounting systems (Enertia, OGSYS, WolfePak, SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks, or similar).
