Job Description

The yard jockey operates forklifts and other shop equipment to move steel, stage materials for welders, and support daily yard and structural fabrication shop operations. This hands-on role assists with shipping and receiving, including loading and unloading trucks and preparing materials for shipment. The position also supports light fabrication and general shop tasks, working closely with welders and fabricators to keep production running smoothly. You will move throughout the yard and shop for most of the shift and remain flexible to help wherever needed.

Responsibilities

  • Operate forklifts safely in both yard and shop environments to move steel and other heavy materials.
  • Stage materials for welders and fabricators to ensure production flows efficiently.
  • Assist with shipping and receiving activities, including loading and unloading trucks, packaging materials, and supporting inventory processes.
  • Support light fabrication tasks and general shop duties as directed by shop leadership.
  • Operate a CNC plasma table from time to time as part of daily production needs.
  • Operate a horizontal saw to cut steel and other materials according to specifications.
  • Use overhead and jib cranes to move and position heavy materials safely and efficiently.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and layouts to ensure materials are cut, staged, and handled correctly.
  • Work closely with welders and fabricators to maintain steady production and address material needs promptly.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area in the yard and shop, understanding that conditions can be messy and require regular housekeeping.
  • Demonstrate strong safety awareness when working around steel, heavy materials, and moving equipment.
  • Remain mobile throughout the yard and shop for most of the shift, assisting in different areas as needed.
  • Follow all company policies, safety procedures, and production guidelines to support a safe and efficient work environment.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience operating forklifts in yard and shop environments.
  • Strong material handling skills, including moving, staging, and organizing steel and other heavy materials.
  • Experience supporting shipping and receiving activities such as loading and unloading trucks, packaging, and basic inventory support.
  • Ability to support light fabrication and general shop tasks beyond basic machine operation.
  • Comfort working around steel and heavy materials in an active structural fabrication environment.
  • Strong safety awareness and commitment to safe work practices.
  • Ability to move throughout the yard and shop for most of the shift and perform physically active work.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to jump in and help where needed.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and layouts to guide material cutting and staging.
  • Comfortable operating overhead and jib cranes to move and position materials safely.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience operating a CNC plasma table.
  • Experience operating a horizontal saw for cutting steel and other materials.
  • Experience in light fabrication work, not limited to machine operation.
  • Familiarity with blueprint reading in a structural or fabrication shop environment.
  • Experience with general production work in a fabrication or steel shop setting.
  • Ability to operate saws and other shop tools safely and effectively.

Why Work Here?

Employees benefit from yearly bonus potential and the opportunity to work in a hands-on structural fabrication environment where teamwork and flexibility are valued. The role offers consistent daytime hours and the chance to build and broaden practical skills with a variety of equipment and fabrication processes.
